The Augusta Beavers were dealt a heavy blow by Melrose-Mindoro, Thursday, Dec. 18 when they traveled to take on the Mustangs in what ended as a 71-35 loss for the visiting team.
Starting off behind, the Beavers could only manage to match half of the Mustangs’ points in the first quarter. Faltering against a strong squad, the mismatch kept going as the two teams headed into halftime with a 32-14 lead for the home team.
In the third period things only got worse for the visiting Beavers as the Mustangs outran them for a 21-6 deficit, ending any chances for Augusta, who managed to rally in their final eight minutes of play, but not enough to top the Mustangs.
Senior Brandon Kimball posted 11 points to lead the team in scoring. Four other players split the single-digit numbers; Noah Plewa and junior Hunter Alix each made six while Jordan Cerrillo and Kayne Korger put up five apiece.
Able to rest after a tough loss, Augusta will travel to Auburndale, Monday, Dec. 29 for tournament play before beginning regular season game play after their holiday break.
