Board hears E-S district audit report

Working through a relatively short business agenda at its regular monthly meeting on Monday, Dec. 8, the Eleva-Strum School Board heard the results of several reports and filled two key staff positions.
Superintendent Craig Semingson took Board members through the district’s 2013-14 audit report, which revealed both positives and negatives regarding the district’s financial operations.
The big-picture analysis was positive, Semingson said, though noting the report did identify 31 misstatements. In those instances, incorrect purchase codes, purchases made using the wrong funds and incorrect use of grant funds were noted.
The audit also identified a deficiency relating to staff oversight of school financial operations, but Semingson pointed out the issue is typical of small school districts like Eleva-Strum.
Also that night, the Board voted to hire Jean Glocke as the new school nurse. Glocke will replace Kathy Thomas, who will retire on Dec. 31.
The Board also approved increasing new LMC director Meg Nord’s contract to 100 percent from 80 percent FTE. Nord was offered the position following Board approval at last month’s meeting. She wrapped up teaching at UW-Eau Claire on Dec. 11 and will assume a LMC director’s position at E-S that has been vacant since summer.
In other news, the Board agreed to hold a special meeting on Wednesday, Dec. 17, to discuss options for the district’s administrative structure for 2015-16 and beyond.
Since Semingson announced his decision to resign as the district’s superintendent at the end of the school year, the Board has discussed the possibility of moving toward an alternative structure for filling superintendent’s duties by splitting them up between multiple administrators. The move could potentially come with cost savings for the district.

• membership to WECAN online job posting site for Wisconsin schools
