Eleva-Strum builds momentum against Colfax, Alma/Pepin

by Doug Sands

The Eleva-Strum Cardinals basketball team has settled into their groove for the season this week, establishing themselves as a team that can win both in the Dairyland Conference and out of it.

The Cardinals kicked off their week by hosting a game against the Colfax Vikings. With a tall starting line-up, Colfax clearly held an advantage over the shorter Cardinals varsity. Eleva-Strum did not let this deter them, punching in a 4-point lead during the first quarter against Colfax, led by Matt Higley, who posted a notable 14 points for the night.

However, the Vikings responded in turn during the second, using their height to their advantage. They tipped the tables and established a lead of their own. Colfax led the game going into half by four points. Eleva-Strum played with intensity during the third, but the Vikings kept pace with them for every shot. By the fourth quarter, Cardinal fans were anxious; Colfax still held a 4-point lead. Every score counted in the fourth quarter as the lead shifted from team to team. With just minutes to go, Colfax was poised to take the win. But Eleva-Strum fired their afterburners, pushing through the weariness to take the game 46-43.

Following Higley came Gage Everson and Caleub Watkins, both with 10 and Hunter Ryskoski with four.

Two days later, the Cardinals took their intensity to the Alma/Pepin Eagles. Like seasoned professionals, Eleva-Strum laid down the law in the first part of the game. Their aggressive energy gathered them an 18-point lead by halftime. With the momentum heavy on their side, the Cardinals pushed their lead all the way to 27 points. Eleva-Strum confidently called back some of their starting players in the fourth, giving others on their team a taste of the Varsity experience. Alma/Pepin surged in the fourth, but their drive was not enough to dig them up out of their deficit. Eleva-Strum closed the match 77-60.

Leading the Cardinals for the night with an impressive 19 points was Caleub Watkins. Trailing Watkins came Olson with 12, Higley with 11, Hunter Ryskoski with 10, Everson with eight and Lorenz with six.

Eleva-Strum now holds a 5-1 overall season record. The Cardinals will take a short break over the holiday season, resuming their game schedule on Dec. 30, when they travel to Royall High School for a 7 p.m. tip-off to play as part of a double-header.
