Fall Creek boys team ready for new year

After coming off a 17-7 record last season, the Crickets appear ready to start the 2014-2015 hoops season, hoping to continue their winning record into another conference title.

Fall Creek won a share of the tough West Cloverbelt Conference Championship last year; it was their second consecutive conference title. In 2012-2013, they won the championship outright, going a perfect 14-0 in conference play. The team ended their season last year with a WIAA Regional Championship game defeat against rival Osseo-Fairchild, who they also shared the conference title with for the season. That appearance in the regional finals was their fifth in the past six seasons, winning four of those games to move on to WIAA sectional play.

The Crickets return two All-Conference players. Matt Anderson, 6-foot-6-inches, and Braden Walbeck, 6-foot-2-inches; both are seniors. Anderson was a First Team All-Conference selection, while Walbeck earned an Honorable Mention vote. The team will see a number of candidates battle for positions on the varsity squad. Another player, 6-foot-2-inch junior Cody Folkers, saw a good share of varsity action last year and will be looked to in order to help bolster the Cricket line-up.

Fall Creek had a solid junior varsity squad last season.  The team posted a very good 15-4 record.  The team lost twice in conference play, both times to Altoona.  Members from last year’s squad to vie for varsity spots should include Devin Kinsella, Eric Reetz, Brayton Meyer, Sawyer Rubeck, Jake Olson and Sam Steinke, though Coach Rick Storlie said there could be others who may step up as well. The Crickets’ c-team from last year posted a 14-6 mark.

The Crickets open up regular season play on Monday, Dec. 1 as they host Elk Mound, a state tournament participant last March in Division 3. Fall Creek has also gotten some time on the court with a scrimmage at Blair-Taylor on Tuesday.  The Wildcats were Division 4 state runners-up from last season.

The entire coaching staff will return, once again. The standing coaches have been together for the past decade and the group is the longest tenured coaching staff in the Cloverbelt Conference. Storlie, on varsity, Jaenke for the junior varsity and Prissel, on the c-team, are eager to once again lead the Crickets.

Fall Creek has had one of the most difficult schedules for all WIAA Div. 4 schools in the state. This year, it got even tougher with the addition of Cuba City to its list, a school generally a staple at the state level of competition, and are one of the state’s top ranked squads yearly. Jerry Pettigoue, coach for Cuba City, is the winningest high school coach in Wisconsin history with over 800 wins.

The Crickets are scheduled to play that game on Feb. 14 in Wisconsin Dells, Wis. It is part of a boys/girls double-header with Cuba City. Cuba City, no. 3, and Fall Creek, no. 6, boys are both preseason Top Ten picks by the Wisconsin Basketball Yearbook in Div. 4 in a recent poll. The girls are also both highly ranked. It looks like another exciting year of Crickets basketball.
