Learning life lessons
Recently, students at the Augusta High School took part in an exercise to help utilize skills they have been learning in occupational leadership for junior achievement.
The courses in the program help students understand the process of gaining a job, including the writing of a resume or cover letter as well as how to dress for an interview. The day of learning included sitting down with representatives of various local companies or agencies, including Bush Bros., the Department of Natural Resources and others. In talking to these people, organizers hope students can gain more from the experience and be able to fully take advantage of skills they have learned in a real-life setting.
Made up of juniors and seniors, the class is a way to help students in their everyday lives now as a method for gaining a part-time job during school or when they eventually go onto college as well as obtaining an occupation at the end of their high school careers. The interviews served as a way for the teens to feel more familiar with the setting when they come to the experience in their real lives.
After speaking to the representatives, the students also took part in a panel as a way to help the organizers better understand what worked and certain aspects of needed improvement. It also helped highlight how much it may have helped those who took part. The class and exercises are a prerequisite to the work study program at Augusta.
