Catherine (Schlosser) Baier

Catherine (Schlosser) Baier, 95 of Durand, WI, passed away peacefully Sunday November 12, 2017.
Catherine was born November 18, 1921 in Arkansaw, WI, to Alois and Mary Schlosser. She was born at home the youngest of 5 siblings.
After graduating from Arkansaw High School in 1939, Catherine continued her studies to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Home Economics from Stout Institute in Menomonie, WI in 1943. Later in 1965 she earned a Master’s Degree in Home Economics from (the re-named) Stout University.
She spent some time traveling after college and worked in Washington D.C for a couple years demonstrating and selling singer sewing machines and teaching canning classes.
In 1946 Catherine traveled to California where she worked as a waitress and eventually began her teaching career as a Home Economics teacher in a junior high school for several years. In 1964 she returned to Wisconsin with her daughter and eventually fulfilled her career as a Home Economics teacher at Plum City high school commuting from Durand daily until she retired in 1984.
On August 3, 1973 Catherine married George Baier (from Eau Galle) and together they resided at her house in Durand. Catherine always loved to travel. Some of her adventures took her and George to Guatemala, Anchorage Alaska, and all across the United States visiting national parks and historical sites. They enjoyed camping in a motor home and made many new friends along the way. Later in life Catherine enjoyed traveling with her daughter and family to Hawaii, Arizona, and internationally to Austria, Germany, Norway, Holland, and Russia.
Over the years Catherine was an active member of the Moose in Menomonie, The Good Sam Camping Club, The Durand Senior Center, and St. Henry’s Catholic Church in Eau Galle. She kept active as a board member on the Pepin County Senior Council and volunteered her time for 33 years, still working one day a week at the Durand Senior Center at age 95!
Some of Catherine’s many favorite hobbies included sewing, crafts, reading, playing cards, camping, rock-hounding, traveling, and researching the family history. Catherine will always be remembered for her willingness to always help others and for her love of teaching various sewing and craft projects. She spent many hours making tied quilts for the Durand Senior center to sell as fund raisers and to give as gifts for family members celebrating special occasions.
Catherine is survived by her daughter Patty Malloy (Lake Hallie, WI); granddaughter Tracy (Tom) Fleck Marshall, WI); 3 great-grand children Michael, Conner, and Sonny Fleck; and many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her husband George Baier; her parents Alois and Mary Schlosser; Sisters Lucy (Oscar) Pelke and Margaret (Art) Baumbach; and Brothers Art and Ralph Schlosser.
