Local Scouts working on projects to achieve Eagle rank

Two area Scouts have nearly completed their Eagle project, to achieve the highest rank of Scouting.
Tim Brunner and Hunter Unser have both been working hard to complete their respective projects, both of which add to their communities.
Unser has been in the Scouts since first grade.
"I joined because it was something to do where I could have fun and hang out with friends," he said.
One of Unser's favorite memories from the Scouts is going to summer camp at Camp Phillips.
"You just get a week off from life to have fun with friends, and not worry about anything else," Unser said.
Unser said he has learned a lot of life skills from the Scouts, such as communication, respect, and responsibility.
For his project, Unser is working on the "Segar-Taylor Field Restoration Project" near Eau Galle.
"This has been in the process for about two years," he said. "We started out by tearing down the old bench, bleachers, fence, and posts."
Unser said he has cut out sod in the infield, put down lime, and will put in bases.
"We installed a chain link fence in the outfield and cemented the posts in," he said. "We've also put a fence around the infield and built new benches."
Unser said he chose the project because the field is in his community, and isn't used.
"My parents said they remember playing 4-H softball there, so I thought it would be cool to try to bring that back," he said.
Scouts must complete their Eagle requirements prior to turning 18. Unser's birthday is February 25, so to beat winter weather, he is in a time crunch to finish his project soon.
"I still have to put fence in front of the benches, put up the backstop, and put in the bases," he said. "We'll have to finish up in the next couple of weeks."
Unser has earned over 21 badges, the required number to advance to Eagle Scout.
"I've met all the requirements," he said. "I just have to finish my project."
Unser is a senior at Durand High School. After graduation, he said he is hoping to go into the military, then attend college.
"Then I'll just go from there," he said.
Tim Brunner is also working on a project to achieve Eagle rank, titled "Stairway to Heaven." He has installed a stone stairway to the Grotto of Mary at Round Hill near Durand.
Brunner joined the Scouts in sixth grade.
"A lot of my friends were in it, and were trying to get me to join," he said. "My brother was also in the Scouts, and he made it sound fun."
Brunner also said Camp Phillips is one of his favorite memories from the Scouts.
"It's a lot of fun," he said. "There are a lot of different activities and new people to meet. You also meet a lot of nice leaders who share stories about their lives, and they're fun to hear."
Brunner said one of the things he's learned by being in the Scouts is respecting other peoples' property.
"I've also learned to respect nature, and leave no trace, which is the Scout motto," he said.
Brunner started his project in July.
"I talked with Dan Langlois for ideas," he said. "I wanted my project to be something that would wow people. The staircase was the last idea he suggested, and I chose that, because I wanted something big."
Brunner used masonry-cut stone that was previously the foundation of a barn in Eleva.
"You can see the chisel marks on the stones," said Brunner's mother, Doreen.
"Langlois hauled the rock to Round Hill to be used for different projects," said his father, Bob.
"We did research before starting—mom did a lot online—to see how to build the staircase," Brunner said. "We planned out how to dig into the ground, lay the crushed ruck with good fines, and level it off so the stones sat evenly."
Brunner said once they got the stones to fit, they packed the spaces between them with more crushed rock.
Brunner said it took about one hour per step, with five to seven stones per step, and built a total of 15 steps including a small landing.
"The hill was very steep, and hard to climb," Doreen said. "Dan thought a staircase would make it easier to access the statue."
Brunner said he completed his project on Saturday, October 11.
"My uncle and I did some tree trimming to make the stairway visible from the road," he said.
Brunner said part of the project also included planting grass on each side and leveling out the ground in front of the staircase.
"We planted grass on the pathway, and plants in a small garden," he said.
Brunner had plenty of time to complete his project, as he doesn't turn 18 until October 7 next year. He said he has earned around 24 badges.
Brunner said he chose to pursue Eagle rank because he has heard it looks good on college applications.
"When I was younger, I always wanted to be like my brother, and he was an Eagle Scout," he said."It is a high honor for which you get respect. I wanted to accomplish the high achievement."
Brunner said he now plans to go to college somewhere in this area, but originally wanted to start his own business after high school.
"I decided it would be best to get an education first," he said.
Brunner still has a few meetings to attend, and a couple more tasks to complete to receive Eagle rank.
