Neil Byrul Sutherland

Neil Byrul Sutherland of Menomonie, formerly of Pepin, died on Saturday, December 9, 2017 at Mayo Clinic Health Systems, Eau Claire, on the day before his 85th birthday. He was born on December 10, 1932 in a little green shack in the Village of Pepin to Byrul and Mabel (Kidd) Sutherland. His grandmother served as the midwife. His family moved 45 times by the time he was 14, following his father’s job. They landed in Stockholm on a little farm in the Bogus Creek area. In high school Neil was a trumpet player in band and ran track, with a record of just a five minute mile. He joined the Army and served 2 ½ years in Japan during the Korean War. He returned home and attended River Falls College. In Neil’s junior year, he married Shelvidene Seipel. The couple made their first home in an old Army barracks on campus and were as poor as church mice. They welcomed two daughters, Sheryl and Sheila. After graduation, Neil started an insurance business in Pepin. It did very well and had 13 employees and three offices at one point in time. He later retired at age 75. Neil was a longtime member of the Pepin United Methodist Church. He was also involved in the Pepin Sportsman’s Club, Lions Club, and Fire Department. In addition, he was a member of the Maiden Rock American Legion Post 158, Nelson VFW, National Rifle Association, Masons, Wisconsin Independent Insurance Agents Association, and the Wisconsin Mutual Insurance Association. Neil took great pride in providing honest insurance solutions to the surrounding community for over 50 years.
He is survived by his wife, Shelivdene “Shelly” Sutherland of Menomonie; two daughters, Sheryl (Kevin) Falde of Spring Valley and Sheila (Brian) Stewart of Menomonie; three grandchildren, Micah Bennett (special friend Kristi Burdick and her children, Ian, Emily, and Alex), Michael Stewart (special friend Ashley Peterson), and Gina Klatt (Kory); four great-grandchildren, Drake, Jada, and Mavorie Bennett, Edward Klatt, and one great-granddaughter on the way; sister, Diane Jacoby of Inver Grove Heights, MN; and many other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; baby sister, Dana; and brother-in-law, Lyle Jacoby.
Visitation will be from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm on Saturday, December 16, 2017 at the United Methodist Church in Pepin. Funeral services will be held at 12:00 pm on Saturday with Pastor Lisa Weaver officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Pepin.
