Tri-Parish Hispanic Ministry to host annual Celebration December 14

The Tri-Parish Hispanic Ministry was formed six years ago, and has since celebrated Our Lady of Guadalupe every year on the Sunday nearest the December 12 holy day.
When it began with Father David, the ministry met one time a month. The formation of the Hispanic minsitry came after a call from the Bishop, asking as many parishes as were able to minister to the Hispanic community.
Three years ago, Father Linzmaier took the helm and the services began to be held every Sunday at 6 p.m. The mass is sometimes delivered in English and Spanish, depending on who’s in attendance.
Parishioner Luz Ortez has been involved with Hispanic ministry all over the area for over 25 years. The Hispanic ministry provides mass, as well as religious education for those who want to receive sacraments.
Ortez and Linda Schaub said the masses average 12 to 20 attendees, but this Sunday’s Lady of Guadalupe mass is expected to draw at least 50.
This Sunday’s mass is special, with extra activities.
“The torch run starts at St. Mary’s and goes out to Lima,” Schaub said. “Runners switch about every mile.”
The runners and the torch are blessed and sent off by Father Linzmaier. Ortez said runners wear a symbol of the Lady of Guadalupe.
Ortez said the story is Juan Diego saw an apparition of a maiden at the Hill of Tepeyac on December 9, 1531, in what would become the town of Villa de Guadalupe in the suburbs of Mexico City.
The maiden, whom Juan Diego recognized as the Virgin Mary, told him to ask the priests to build a church at that site in her honor.
Diego relayed the message to the Archbishop of Mexico City, who did not believe him, and told him to bring back a sign.
The Virgin healed Juan’s uncle, and told him to gather flowers from the top of Tepeyac Hill, where he found roses blooming in December on the normally barren hilltop. The Virgin arranged the flowers in his tilma, or cloak, and when Diego opened his cloak before the archbishop on December 12, the flowers fell to the floor, and the Virgin of Guadalupe’s image was printed on the fabric of the tilma.
“People go up the rough, rocky road to the church in Mexico City on their knees,” Ortez said. “Sunday we’ll be doing the rosary outside and kneel leading to the altar. It is a promise we make to sacrifice something for her.”
Once the procession reaches Lima, Father Linzmaier, dancers, and musicians greet them and welcome them into the church. A statue of the Lady of Guadalupe is carried into the church and a shrine is built around it. Mass is then said.
This year’s mass will be bilingual.
“Anyone in the community is welcome to come,” Schaub said. “We had almost as many English speaking guests as Spanish speaking last year.”
After mass, a potluck meal with cake is served. Schaub said there is always lots of food.
“This year we also have a baptism being held,” she said. “Last year there were five first communions.”
“It is a special day,” Ortez said.
Schaub said the nearest Hispanic ministries are in Altoona and Independence, and they have parishioners from Arcadia, Red Wing, Independence, and Menomonie.
The runners will leave Saint Mary’s in Durand at 1 p.m. on Sunday, and take Highway 25 to Highway 10 to County Road V. Dancers will meet the procession at approximately 2:30 at Holy Rosary, and the celebration of mass will be held at 3, with the singing of special hymns to honor the Virgin of Guadalupe. The potluck supper will begin at 4 p.m for the Tri-Parish Community.
