Danner Brummer, the 14 year old eighth grade son of Toby and Jenny Brummer has been skiing since the age of 5 andnow in high school wanted to be a part of a high school team. Danner has decided to be a part of the Rochester High School Ski Team. He went to the school board last summer to request the merging of Lewiston Altura to be a part of the team and was given the go ahead.”
The team merged comes from Wabasha-Kellogg, Mayo, Century, John Marshall and Lewiston Altura. They ski as a team but during sections Danner will represent LAHS as a lone skier.
Throughout the week Danner practices about 25-30 hours on the hills working on his speed, techniques and slack line training.
Danner, shares.”I love the challenge of the hills. I try getting down as fast as possible and at present I’m #2 on the hills with Joey Viggiano from Mayo as #1. My personal goal is to push hard every race but going there to enjoy it. It’s a great time with team building and I would tell anyone to just come out and try it.”
Danner suggests that the cost of joining the team cost about $400 and you have to buy your own lift tickets. As far as rides to Welch for practice, some of us ride share or you can meet in Rochester and take the team bus. I meet up with Maria Nielsen, a teammate from Wabasha.
“The ski season is really a short season and skiing is not just about the race, it’s about learning new techniques and all the dynamics that come with skiing. And the muscle building really gets the legs in good shape for track too.”
“Skiing with the team has been great fun and I have learned a lot. We have some great coaches and they are so willing to give of their time and teach us all about the controls that help on the hills and it’s great that the school has allowed us to have this team. I hope some other from Lewiston Altura will try it out and hit the hills with the team. I have met so many neat friends. I was a little worried from the start to be the only one from LA but the kids are great and it been a lot of team building going on between races. So come on out with your skis and poles and join the fun!”
