Commercials to feature PEM

By Cheryl Nymann, Editor
When you’re doing something good and when it helps others, it has to be a rewarding feeling to know that others are taking notice of it. That is what has happened with our own PEM School District. The collaborative work between teachers within the district is benefiting not only themselves to become better teachers, but the end goal is creating more successful student learners. And, they’ve all been recognized on a state level at the MEA.
Beginning in mid-March, commercials will be aired featuring these efforts of PEM staff and students. Waivers were signed by students and staff participating in the commercial, makeup applied, questions were asked, and the filming was completed two weeks ago.
Filming for the commercial took place on Wednesday and Thursday February 25th & 26th. Prior to taping the interview segment for the commercial, make up and tweeking of the hair was completed. Interviews took place in the high school library. teachers, administrators, and new teachers were taking place on the Wednesday evening. On Thursday, the classrooms of Ben Midge, Joe Cerar, Tony McGee, Mary Chick, and Connor Letts were filmed with students in them. Also filmed were teachers collaborating with one another as they were walking in the hallway.
Education Minnesota Public Affairs Specialist Doug Dooher explained the purpose of the commercial, noting that Joe Cerar was an integral part of the reason behind PEM being featured. And, that reason is all about teacher collaboration. “PEM is taking the lead and control of this program,” Dooher said. Under Cerars’ guidance, PEM received a three year grant from Education Minnesota (and are asking their Legislators to invest in kids through this program). The power of this program is gaining greater collaboration for staff which has a trickle down effect on the students.
Working closely with the administration, who are very supportive of this program, there are 12 Peer Coaches who are trained in three 8 hour training sessions on positive feedback, better supervision in classroom, and changing things to improve student learning and also have monthly meetings; then each of them work with 12 teachers as well. Teachers write goals, ask one another questions, share ideas, and give suggestions. What a great way for the experienced teachers to share with the new teachers, and visa versa. The overall goal is to help improve student learning. Something which they’ve already seen success with. “Most teachers are very excited about being a part of this,” Cerar said. Some teachers even stop him in the hall and give an update on how the success of their goal. This district wide program needs a collaborative effort for teachers in order for it to work. For instance, one teachers’ goal discussed was maintaining communication with students and parents throughout the school year which helps teacher and parents be on the same page with their childs’ education. A goal in an elementary math classroom was to include the 12 most powerful words in the classroom. These words (such as compare/contrast, predict, evaluate, infer, describe, summarize) are powerful because students learn about a higher power of thinking which leads to a deeper understanding of what they’re doing.
This segment of Education Minnesota will air in mid-March all across the great state of Minnesota. Be sure to tune in and you just might see someone you know on television.
