Dean Holtorf, 89, of Elgin, died Monday, January 8, 2018, at his home in Elgin. He was surrounded by his family and had recently been in hospice care.
Dean John Holtorf was born August 6, 1928, in Dodge Center, Minnesota, the son of Jack and Bertie Holtorf. He married Joan Becker, and the couple later divorced. Dean served his country in the U.S. Marine Corp from 1952 – 1960. A teamster business agent, he was also a truck driver. He eventually owned and operated his truck. A favorite hobby of Dean’s was butchering and smoking meats for friends and family. He enjoyed hunting and was involved with and a member of Pheasants Forever. He also enjoyed fishing, camping, golfing, traveling, and spending time with his family. He will be remembered as a loving and caring man.
He is survived by a daughter, Becky (Brad) Fritz of Kasson, Minnesota; and a son, Randy (Janice) Holtorf of Rochester; five grandchildren, Sonja, Jamie, Gary, Katie, and Haley; and seven great-grandchildren. Also surviving are brothers Jack and Jerry Holtorf, both residing in Texas, Jim and Dick (Mary Ellen) Holtorf, both of Rochester; sisters, LaDonna Holtorf of Rochester, and Lillian Goldsmith of Stewartville.
Dean was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Verlie Layman, Marion Becker, and Lorraine Nieman; a brother Don Holtorf; and a grandson, Connor Holtorf.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Noon on Saturday, February 10, 2018, at the American Legion Post, 215 3rd. ST. S.W. in Plainview, MN. Burial will be at 3:00 p.m. at the Elgin Cemetery in Elgin, MN. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to a Veterans Charity of the donor’s choice. Mahn Family Funeral Home – Rochester Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
