Donna Ryan

Donna Marie (Cummings) Ryan, 72, passed away on Monday, October 4, 2020 at her home in rural Plainview, from cardiac complications. She was born to Donald and Burnetta Cummings on August 2, 1948 in Cresco, Iowa. She graduated from LeRoy High School in 1966. Right after high school Donna moved to Rochester, MN to work as a medical secretary and supervisor at the Mayo Clinic. She worked in the Department of Pediatric Neurology during her 44 year career at Mayo Clinic. Donna met her husband Larry Ryan through a friend on a blind date. They were married on November 20, 1971 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in LeRoy, MN. After they were married, they lived on a farm east of Plainview. They were blessed with a daughter Erin Marie in 1981. They were members of St. Joachim’s Catholic Church in Plainview.

Donna enjoyed going on day trips shopping with her daughter and sisters. Christmas was her favorite holiday and she loved giving Christmas gifts to her family. She loved to cook and grill, and entertaining for her family and friends. Larry and Donna were part of a neighborhood card group for years. They also enjoyed attending Polka Fests and dancing to old time music. She was very proud of her Irish Heritage and was able to take a trip to Ireland with her sister, Rita.

She was an avid reader and loved to knit, and recently took up the art of quilting. She enjoyed living on the farm, being outside, and taking care of the yard and flowers. For many years she had a large garden and did a lot of freezing and canning of vegetables. Throughout the years, they had several cats who were part of the family including: Pooh, Meowe, Sassy, Callie, and Lucy. Donna was a giving and loving person who will be missed by all whose lives she touched.

Donna is survived by her husband, Larry Ryan of Plainview; daughter, Erin and husband Matt Stevenson of Lime Springs, Iowa; two sisters, Kate Dunagan, and Rita (James) Vodraska; three brothers, Frank (Peggy) Cummings, Dave (Tari) Cummings, and Dan (Deb) Cummings; and several cousins, nieces, and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; father-in-law, Ralph Ryan and mother-in-law, Eileen Ryan; her brothers-in-law, Bob Dunagan, Jim Ryan and John Ryan; and sister-in-law, Judy Ryan.

Friends and family may visit from 9:00 a.m. to 12 noon on Friday, October 9th, at Schleicher Funeral Homes, Plainview Chapel. A private funeral Mass will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, October 9th, at St. Joachim’s Catholic Church in Plainview after a public viewing. Burial will follow the service in St. Joachim’s Catholic Cemetery.
