George Leo Back, 80, of Elgin, passed away at his home on Saturday, October 3, 2020. He was born November 25, 1939 in Oxford, Iowa to John R. and Hattie (Harvey) Back. George graduated from high school in 1957 in Spring Valley, MN. He went on to serve his country in the US Navy from August 1957 – November 1960. On February 16, 1963 he married Karen Fenske.
George worked at IBM in Rochester for 33 years from 1961 until he retired in 1994. He also was employed at Crenlo in Rochester from 1994 - 2007. He was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Plainview. George especially enjoyed fishing, going to casinos, and spending time talking with neighbors.
George is survived by his loving wife, Karen Back of Elgin; son, Kurt (Claudia) Back of Rochester; daughter, Heather (John) Watson of New Port Richey, FL; his favorite grandchild, Christian Back of Minneapolis; brothers, Tom (Merna) Back of Palo, Iowa, Hubie (Patty) Back of Apple Valley, sister-in-law’s, Elaine Back of Anoka, JoAnn (Jim) Klassen of Oklahoma City, and Sheila (Bill) Myers of Rochester; brother-in-law, Jon (Kathy) Krieger; nephews, nieces, cousins, and many dear friends. George was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Eileen (Huntington) Hallam, and brothers, John and Gail Back.
Friends and family may visit from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 21, at Schleicher Funeral Homes, Plainview Chapel. Masks are required and please practice social distancing. A Private Graveside Service will be held at Minnesota Veterans Cemetery in Preston on Thursday, October 22, with Pastor Krista Henning – Ferkin officiating.
