Grand re-opening scheduled at Plainview Area History Center

The Plainview Area History Center will host a grand re-opening from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12.
The non-profit Center, which opened in the fall of 1999, is at 40 4th St. SW, Plainview, in the former Plainview Methodist Church.
It is operated by volunteers who have organized the 1866 church into several sections representing the history of Plainview and the area.
There's a music room, featuring a pipe organ donated from St. Joachim Catholic Church; a display of history and artifacts from the J.R. Watkins liniment company, founded in 1868 in Plainview; memorabilia from former businesses; a cabinet from the office of Dr. Charles Slocumb, a prominent physician from Plainview; an old school room; items from the former Gem Theatre (1929-1967); a train station reenacting the former Plainview depot; a Lakeside Foods display; an area with military history and artifacts; an area dedicated to how Plainview was named (it was established as Centerville in 1856); and hundreds of historic artifacts.
Both levels of the building have been repainted, and each area has been re-established. The genealogy area, for example, was reorganized and moved to the main floor, and the volunteers added a gathering area with a fireplace.
The Center has received a grant for a microfilm reader.
