Melvin “Mel” Meyers

The funeral service for Melvin “Mel” Meyers will be at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, January 26th, at St. Joachim’s Catholic Church in Plainview with Father William Becker and Father Paul Nelson co-officiating. Burial will be in St. Joachim’s Catholic Cemetery in Plainview, with Military Rites by the Plainview American Legion Post #179.

Mel died peacefully at the Mayo Clinic Health System – Lake City Hospital on Wednesday, January 21, 2015 at the age of 87.

Melvin Marvin Meyers was born on June 9, 1927 at home in Olmsted County. He attended country school through the 8th grade after which he farmed until joining the US Army in February of 1946. Melvin served as a Technician, 5th Grade, and was honorably discharged in August of 1947. He did not leave the US during his service, but bragged of guarding California.

On June 16, 1953, Melvin married Eileen Ann Dunagan from across the road in Rochester, MN. Melvin and Eileen began their life together in Douglas, MN before moving to their permanent home in Plainview in 1956. Melvin was a lifelong dairy and crop farmer and also worked seasonally at Libby’s in Rochester from 1953 to 1972. Melvin retired from dairy farming in 1999, but continued to farm various crops through 2010.

Melvin will be especially remembered for his love of family and farming, as well as his wonderful sense of humor and uncanny wit.

Melvin is survived by his wife of 61 years, Eileen Ann; children, Mark (Jean), Terry (Sue), Maureen (Joe) Miller, Diane (Paul) Fick, Greg (Shelly), and Mary (Paul) Chick all of Plainview. Melvin was also blessed with 27 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Louis Chris and Clara Ophelia (Kohn) Meyers, 5 sisters, 3 brothers, 3 infant granddaughters; nephew, Darrell Riess, infant son, Paul, and beloved son, Don.

Visitation was held on Sunday, January 25th, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Schleicher Funeral Homes, Plainview Chapel in Plainview, and from 10:00 a.m. until time of the service on Monday, January 26th, at St. Joachim’s Catholic Church in Plainview.

The family would like to thank the caregivers at Mayo Clinic Hospital – Rochester, Saint Marys Campus as well as those at the Lake City Medical Center for their compassionate care and support.
