Osseo-Fairchild hosts annual conference art show

By Brian Sheridan

Schools from around the area came to Osseo-Fairchild on Friday, May 4 to be a part of the annual conference art show.

The show displays works of art from students around the conference and has them competing in various categories. This was the first year for Osseo-Fairchild to host the show and brought in nine schools and a number of students to show of sculptures, paintings, photos and more.

Lisa Covelli, Osseo-Fairchild art teacher, said the show was hosted by Greenwood last year and felt like that was the first time the art show garnered a lot of attention. With Osseo-Fairchild hosting it this year, she said the event was “amazing” and was blown away by the students.

“It’s just nice for our students to see what other students are doing in the other schools in our area and kind of feed off each other and inspire each other,” Covelli said. “I’m hoping they push each other to produce better work each year. Kind of seeing what other people are doing each year is a good thing.”

The show also featured guest speakers including Jacey Teal, a UW-Eau Claire computer graphics student who runs their own photography business, as well as Steve Kozar, a hyper-realist watercolor painter. Both of them spoke about their experience getting into art and the journey along the way.

The speaker portion also featured a surprise appearance by Wisconsin State Representative Kathy Bernier who heard about the event through word of mouth and decided to come to Osseo and speak briefly about art in her life.

Bernier talked about how the arts have been strong in her family, with her grandfather being a widely successful artist with pieces sold to actors Robin Williams and Eddie Murphy.

After the speakers, students received first place and runner up awards for the different categories at the show. Students also received a Judge’s Choice Award and honorable mention.
