OFAFC cooperative wrestling team begins season this week

OSSEO - The Osseo-Fairchild/Augusta/Fall Creek (OFAFC) cooperative wrestling program begins its 2021-22 season this week Thursday, Dec. 2 in a dual meet at Durand beginning at 7 p.m..

The Dragons will also compete this week Saturday, Dec. 4 in a multi-dual invitational meet at Mondovi beginning at 10 a.m.

Last season, upended and affected by the COVID-19 virus, led to a truncated scheduled with no Cloverbelt Conference meet and the frustration of trying to find enough matches for the wrestlers, wearing masks and watching graduated senior Luke Fischer win a regional title at 220 pounds and finish third at sectionals, only to miss out on the state individual meet due to limitations on the number of wrestlers qualifying unlike normal.

"I am excited that the wrestlers have been putting the time in in the off season and are excited for the season and not having to wear masks while they have to wrestle." OFAFC head coach Dan Schulte said.

Still, the Dragons finished 4-3 in dual meet competition (6th at the WIAA Division 2 Arcadia Regional meet) and return starters Cayden Guntner, Breanna Wier, Sullivan Haskins, Parker Coach, Hunter Breaker, Isaiah Waggoner and Kaden Moseley.

"Hunter Breaker and Isaiah Waggoner look to have a great seasons and do well at conference, regionals and sectionals," Schulte said. "But I believe everyone could potentially have a great season given how hard they've worked and hopefully continue to improve."

The Cloverbelt Conference meet returns this February in Cadott with the regional the following weekend at Arcadia and individual sectional meet in Amery. Barring the unexpected state is back again at the Kohl Center in Madison Feb. 24-26. And this year there will be a separate girls' state tournament to held in La Crosse Jan. 29.
