Alice M. Johnson, 99, Lake City

Alice M. Johnson, age 99, of Lake City, died Tuesday, January 29, 2019 at Mayo Clinic Heath System Care Center in Lake City. Alice Schreiber was born November 25, 1919 to Theodore Schreiber and Elsie (Hafermeister) Schreiber, of Freistadt, Wisconsin. She was a descendent of Ernest and Engel Hilgendorf of Dreslow, Germany, who left imprisonment and persecution from that country in 1839 to be one of the early settlers in Wisconsin before it became a state. They were of a line of believers known as “old Lutherans”.
She graduated from elementary school in Ozaukee County, Wisconsin in 1934. After school, she worked until she married on her parent’s dairy farm and apple orchard. Her parents sold the bulk of their apples in the city of Milwaukee. In 1949 she married Alvin Johnson of Pepin Hill, a grandson of Knute Johnson, who was one of the earliest settlers of Wabasha County before Minnesota became a state. On Pepin Hill, they farmed together from 1949 to 1975 where they raised their six children. A hard worker, she also kept several large gardens as well as doing extensive canning and preserving. A no nonsense woman, she also called a spade a spade. After a fire consumed their barn in 1974, they sold the farm portion and with the sons, moved to Alberta, Canada in 1975 where they resided till 1982. In 1982 Alice, Alvin and Tim moved to rural Galesville, Wisconsin, until Alvin passed away in 1984. In 1985 Alice moved to Lake City, a few years later Tim moved back to Lake City from Winona where he lovingly cared for her well being until her passing.
Alice was a longtime faithful member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and its Ladies Aid in Lake City. She was a very diligent and hard worker. She supported Alvin in the building up of the farm and raising her children. Alice was a very good gardener, any plant flourished under her loving care. She kept the grounds of the farm in mint condition, mowing the vast amount of grass. Alice had beautiful flower beds and a vegetable garden that provided amply for her family. In all things Alice supported Alvin in everything he did including picking up and following him in their elderly years to another country and starting over.
She is survived by her six children and their spouses, Carole Kennedy, Appleton, WI, Miriam and Al Holtan, Lake City, MN, Ted and Jeanette Johnson, Red Deer, Alberta, Canada, Linka and Todd Kennedy, Lake City, MN, Joel Johnson, Millet, Albert, Canada, and Tim Johnson, Lake City, MN; 15 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin, a sister, Dorothy, and her parents, Theodore and Elsie.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 9, 2019 at 11:00am at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Lake City with Pastor Nathan Cordes officiating. Interment will be at French Creek Cemetery in the Town of Ettrick, near Galesville, WI. Family and friends may call at the church on Saturday, February 9, 2019 from 9am until the time of service. Memorials are preferred to St. John’s Lutheran Church, 520 W. Chestnut St., Lake City, MN 55041. The Abbott Funeral Home of Wabasha is in charge of arrangements. www.abbottfh.com
