Daryl 'Mud' Mathias, 83, Wabasha

Daryl Louis “Mud” Mathias, age 83, of Wabasha, passed away May 9, 2017, at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center in Wabasha after a brave 20 plus year battle against cancer.  Daryl was born in Wabasha, Minnesota March 29, 1934, the son of Louis and Margaret (Koelmel) Mathias.
Daryl was a 1953 graduate of Wabasha High School.  Upon graduation, he was employed by the National Tea Grocery Company (later Fleming Foods) in Minneapolis.   He later would proudly serve in the United States Army with the military police serving primarily at Fort Carson, Colorado.  Upon his discharge, he returned to employment with National Tea where he would work for a total of 44 years.  At one point during his career he went 28 plus years without missing a day of work due to illness, an achievement of which he was very proud.
Daryl married Frances (Melby) Schoenbeck June 14, 1969, and they made their home in Wabasha. Frances passed away Friday, May 12, 2017.  He was an avid gardener who maintained a large garden of vegetables and flowers, which he took great pleasure in sharing with family, friends, neighbors, and total strangers.  He was a Minnesota Twins, Vikings, and Gopher fan.  He enjoyed bus trips to the casinos in the area.   Daryl was a proud member of American Legion Post #50 where he served on the color guard for many years. Daryl especially enjoyed preparing his famous chicken gizzards for family and friends. People traveled from miles around to enjoy “Mud’s Gizzards”. Daryl donated his remains to the Mayo Clinic Department of Anatomy for medical education and research.
He is survived by brothers and sisters-in-law, Gerald and Ruth Mathias, Wabasha, MN, and Joseph and Mary Jo Mathias, Byron, MN; sister, Bernadine Gessner, Rochester, MN; many nephews and nieces and their children; step-grandchildren and their children.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Margaret Mathias, brothers, Walter, Richard, Orville, and LaVerne Mathias and sisters, Lorraine Mathias, Loretta Schones and Eleanor Schnoor.
A joint visitation for Daryl and Frances will be held at the Abbott Funeral Home on Friday, May 19, 2017 from 4-7 pm. A memorial service for Daryl will be held on Saturday, June 10, 2017 at 2:00 pm at Grace Memorial Episcopal Church in Wabasha with the Rev. Barbara Mathias officiating.  Family and friends may also call at the church on Saturday, June 10 one hour before the service. The memorial service for Frances will be held on Saturday, May 20, 2017 at 2:30pm at the Wabasha United Church of Christ. Memorials for Daryl are preferred to St. Elizabeth’s Community Development Foundation, 1200 Grant Blvd W, Wabasha, MN 55981.
