Earl Edwin Jacobs, Plainview

Earl Edwin Jacobs, a life-long resident of Plainview, MN passed on Monday, May 13, 2019. Earl was born November 9, 1925 to Edwin Walter Otto and Mae Gladys Nienow Jacobs in rural Plainview. He was raised on the family farm in rural Plainview by his parents and grandparents. Earl attended Plainview Schools up to the 8th grade. After school he worked on the family farm for his uncle until he entered the Army. He served from 1945-1946 including time in Korea. After being discharged he worked on the family farm and at his cousin’s car dealership in Fertile, Minnesota.
He and Rita Teresa Deming were married on October 20, 1951 in Plainview, MN. Together they raised 5 daughters and 5 sons in the house that Earl built. In 1953 he was employed by Interstate Power Company and continued working there until his retirement in 1988. While working for Interstate he owned and operated Family Shoe Repair out of his home for several years. In 1970 he established Plainview Disposal Service and Recycling Center. He and Rita worked together in this business for 25 years.
Earl was a 50-year member of Plainview American Legion Post 179 where he served a term as Commander. He was a member of St. Joachim Knights of Columbus and served on the Plainview City Council. Earl had the privilege of participating in a Veterans Honor Flight in 2010. He enjoyed camping trips, family times and watching the Twins and the Vikings. He and Rita traveled to the Holy Land, Alaska, and Germany to visit family as well as many other places in the U.S.
Earl is survived by Rita, his wife of 67 years, his sons, Marl (Denise) Jacobs of Plainview, MN, Dan (DeeRenee) Jacobs of Port Angeles, WA, John (Jane) Jacobs of Rochester, MN, and Michael (Dan) Jacobs of Portland, OR. His daughters, Jennifer Barney, Michigan, ND, Mary (Bill) Wagner of Rochester, MN, Susan (Mike) Thompson of Casper, WY, Julie (Chuck) Kruger of St. Cloud, MN, and Karen Jacobs of Mason City, IA. His 20 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren were his pride and joy.
He is preceded in death by his son, Thomas Jacobs, son-in-law, Michael Barney and 2 brothers, Donald and Kenneth and sister-in-law, Ione Jacobs.
A visitation will be held at St. Joachim Catholic Church on Thursday, May 16, 2019 from 4-8 pm with a rosary at 3:30. Visitation will also be 1 hour before the funeral service on Friday. A mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Friday, May 17, 2019 at 11:00 am at St. Joachim Catholic Church with Father William Becker officiating. Burial will be at St. Joachim Catholic Cemetery. Military graveside services will be conducted by the Plainview American Legion Post 179.
