Everett Marcou

 Everett R. Marcou, age 90, of Wabasha, died Wednesday, December 31, 2014 at St. Elizabeth’s Nursing Home in Wabasha. He was born May 6, 1924 in West Salem, WI, the son of Henry and Grace (Hughes) Marcou. The family moved to Wabasha when he was young. He graduated from Wabasha High School in 1942. He then served his country in the U. S. Navy during WWII, serving in the South Pacific on the Marshall Islands. He returned to Wabasha where he became a self employed businessman. He and Marcella Smeltzer were united in marriage November 19, 1947 in Wabasha. Everett was involved in trucking and school busing. In 1960 he started Marcou Realty in Wabasha where he remained active until recently. Together with his wife the owned and operated the Montgomery Wards catalog business on Main Street in Wabasha for several years.
 Everett and his brother, Ken, owned land on the Zumbro River bottoms, near Theilman, which they sold to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. This land became the beginnings of the Zumbro River Bottoms Wildlife Management Area for the State of Minnesota. He and his brothers also developed three housing subdivisions on Sand Prairie where they built and sold spec homes. He and others also were instrumental in starting the annual Wabasha Riverboat Days Celebration with his son, Ron, and his association with the Delta Queen Steamboat Company. He and Marcella gifted to the City of Wabasha in 1977 Block 66 in South Wabasha for use as a city park.
 He was a faithful and active member of the United Church of Christ and the Carnelian Lodge #40, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons and its Scottish Rite. He was also a member of the Wabasha American Legion Post #50 and the Burkhardt-Roemer VFW Post #4086. He was also a past member of the Wabasha Chamber of Commerce and the Southeast Minnesota Realtors Association.
 Everett is survived by his wife, Marcella Marcou, Wabasha, MN; sons and daughter-in-law, Ron and Fran Marcou, Hendersonville, TN, Blaine Marcou, Wabasha, MN; daughter, Jean Roth, Zumbrota, MN; nine grandchildren, Kara (Shawn) Corpman, Andrew Marcou, Kristina Preston, Erin, Charles and Elizabeth MacBrine, Jill (Bob) Huebert, Matt and Brandon (Lacey) Roth; six great-grandchildren; brother, Douglas Marcou, Colfax, WI; sisters and brother-in-law, Midge and Ray Vierregge, Camano Island, WA, Mildred Johnson, Bothell, WA; nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by daughter, JoAnn MacBrine, grandson, Alex Marcou, parents, Henry and Grace Marcou, brothers, Ken and Howard Marcou and sister, Marion Gosse.
 A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, January 7, 2015 at 11:00am at the Wabasha United Church of Christ with the Reverend James Clausen officiating. Interment will be this Spring at Riverview Cemetery in Wabasha with military rites provided by the Wabasha American Legion and Burkhardt-Roemer VFW Posts. Family and friends may call at the Abbott Funeral Home on Tuesday from 4-7pm at which time a Masonic service will be held.
