Lavern A. Hackman, 78, Wabasha

Lavern A. Hackman, age 78, of Wabasha, formerly of Fort Atkinson, IA, died peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, November 19, 2017. His death was due to cancer. He was born December 7, 1938 in Lawler, Iowa, the son of Philip and Martha (Ott) Hackman. He graduated from Fort Atkinson High School and then began working for Myers Brothers Construction until he entered the service. He served active duty in the U. S. Army from 1961-1963 and then served in the U. S. Army Reserves through 1967. He married Jeanette Schaufenbuel June 26, 1965 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Waucoma, IA. Following his service years he worked at White Farm in Charles City, IA until 1985 when the family moved to Westminster, CO where he worked as an inspector for the United States Defense Department. The couple retired to rural Wabasha in 2000.
While living in Fort Atkinson, Lavern was an active member of the community, serving on the volunteer Fire Department, serving as a Boy Scout Leader and volunteering his time in town events. He was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church where he devoted his time to cleaning the church and its grounds. He was a member of the National Catholic Society of Foresters and a member of the Fort Atkinson American Legion Post #166. After moving to Wabasha he was a member of St. Felix Catholic Church.
 Lavern loved the outdoors and he always had great gardens and meticulous yards. He loved fishing and anything outdoors. His hobby was woodworking. He loved making things for his family and spending time in his shop.
 He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Jeanette Hackman, Wabasha, MN; sons and daughters-in-law, Stephen and Kia Hackman, Mazeppa, MN, Christopher and Heidi Hackman, Castalia, IA; one grandson, Benjamin Hackman, Castalia, IA; brothers and sister-in-law, Eugene Hackman, Nevada City, CA, Floyd and Vernelle Hackman, Fort Atkinson, IA; sister, Bernice Huinker, Fort Atkinson, IA. He is also survived by Jeanette’s family-brothers, Jerry (Mona) Schaufenbuel, State Road, NC, Gene (Arlene) Schaufenbuel, Fairfax, IA, Bob Schaufenbuel, Cedar Rapids, IA, Marvin (Chris) Schaufenbuel, Atkins, IA; brother-in-law, Norbert (Mary) Hackman, Fort Atkinson, IA; sisters, Phyllis (Bob) Fisher, Pella, IA, Mary Jane Mueller, Tulsa, OK, Mona (Lynn) Lorimer, Fayetteville, AR, Elaine Burk, Lisbon, IA, Kathleen (Bob) Hadley, Fairfield Bay, AR, Joyce Schaufenbuel, Colorado Springs, CO, Marcia (Bob) Morris, Conifer, CO; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Philip and Martha Hackman, his parents-in-law, Ben and Elizabeth Schaufenbuel and sister-in-law, Elnore Hackman.
 A memorial Mass was offered on Saturday, November 25, 2017 at 11:00am at St. Felix Catholic Church in Wabasha with the Reverend Father Gregory Parrott officiating. Interment will be at a later date at Oak Hill Cemetery in Castalia, IA. Military rites were performed outside the church following the service by members of the Wabasha American Legion Post #50, the Burkhardt-Roemer VFW Post #4086 and the MNARNG Honor Guard. Visitation was at the church on Saturday one hour before the Mass. The Abbott Funeral Home of Wabasha was in charge of arrangements. www.abbottfh.com
