PTO raises $17,802 for the W-K playground at golf tournament
The Wabasha-Kellogg Par-ent Teacher Organization (PTO) wrapped up its most successful fundraising event this month after the second annual Fore the Falcons Golf Tournament raised $17,802, more than doubling last year's total and exceeding the organi-zation's fundraising goal.PTO organizers hoped to raise $10,000 this year, up from the $7,850 generated during the inaugural tourna-ment. By the end of the event, the tournament had surpassed that goal by nearly $8,000, making it the largest fundraiser in the PTO's history and bring-ing in more than the group typically raises through all of its annual fundraising efforts combined.Organizers credited the re-cord-setting total to increased community awareness, earlier planning, and a larger team of volunteers. Participation also grew significantly. The tournament reached its max-imum capacity of 25 teams, nearly doubling the 14 teams that participated in the first tournament.Several new fundraising opportunities also contrib-uted to the total. A silent auction raised $2,120, while ten premium hole sponsors expanded community support for the event. Harris Co.'s Drone Ball Drop generated an additional $2,100, with the company matching donations up to $1,000.PTO organizers thanked the volunteers, sponsors, golfers, and community members for their support, which made the event possible. They said additional information about the playground project and the use of the funds will be shared in the coming months. The effort to improve the school's playground began in 2022, after fifth-grade students Carissa Jensen and Aaliyah Siegel attended a PTO meeting to share concerns about recess. The students explained that the aging playground equip-ment did not provide enough opportunities for active play for older elementary students. In response, the PTO pur-chased new basketballs, foot-balls, kickballs, a 9 Square game, and several other rec-reational items. While those additions provided immediate improvements, students and staff continued to express concerns that the existing play-ground equipment did not ad-equately serve fourth-, fifth-, and sixth-grade students. As those conversations con-tinued, the PTO developed a long-term vision for a play-ground specifically designed for 4th through 6th graders, with a fundraising goal of about $115,000.The PTO chose equipment designed for long-term du-rability and continued en-gagement, aiming to create a playground that remains challenging and enjoyable throughout the school year. PTO leaders noted that re-search has shown recess and unstructured play can improve students' focus and attention in the classroom while providing a healthy outlet for energy. With the success of this year's golf tournament, the PTO has remained dedicated to the fundraising campaign to help complete the playground project. The PTO said it looks forward to sharing additional updates on the project as fund-raising continues and hopes to welcome the community back for next year's Fore the Falcons Golf Tournament
