Ruth Williams

Ruth Miriam Williams, 88, died peacefully on Sunday, November 23, 1:33 am, at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, Wabasha, Minnesota. She was born on December 31, 1925, in Jamaica, Queens, New York to Elias Ilmari and Fanni (Wiirret) Park. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev.erend Charles Philip “Phil” Williams, on April 2, 2007, and by her sisters Astrid Smith, Irene Churchill, Ellen Lewis and Martha Churchill.
With a Masters of Special Education from the University of Minnesota, Miriam worked at Lincoln School and later at Jefferson school, in Winona. In Kansas City, Missouri she continued this work and with the move back to Winona, she became Director of the Winona Developmental Achievement Center (DAC). Later, with the backing and assistance of Senator Tim Penny, the new DAC building was constructed in 1985. She was an accomplished pianist, organist and writer.
Her early years were spent growing up in Bellmore, Long Island, New York until the family moved to Willingboro, New Jersey. An avid student, she attended Boston University at the age of 16 and later graduated from Eastern Nazarene University majoring in theology and English, with a Bachelor of Arts.
She accepted a position in Kansas City, Missouri, at the missions department of the Nazarene Headquarters with the intention of attending the Nazarene Theological Seminary. It was here that she married Charles Philip Williams, on April 13, 1954, and they moved to their first church in Richmond, Missouri (1954-1957).
From here, they moved to Winona, Minnesota and pastored the Church of the Nazarene (1958-1968) and moved to Kansas City, Missouri and the Dundee Hills Church of the Nazarene (1968-1980), then coming back a second time to Winona, to pastor the Church of the Nazarene from 1980-1988. After two years of retirement, they decided to take on a full-time pastorate at the Zion Evangelical Church, Brownsville, Minnesota, from 1990-2001.
Between 1957 and 1964, four sons were born to Miriam and Pastor Phil: Charles Philip Jr. (Francesca), Paul Lewis, John-Thomas Park, and David Brooks (Carrie). Grandmother of Lindsay (Michael Brown), Kristin,Taryn and Abby and Great Grandmother to Emma, Elijah and Leyna Brown.
Funeral services to celebrate her life will be on Saturday, November 29, at the Zion Evangelical Church, Brownsville, Minnesota, at 11:00 A.M., with Rev. Jason Brannan officiating. A visitation will be held at the church, before the service, starting at 10:00 A.M. The interment will immediately follow the service at the Zion Evangelical Cemetery, in Brownsville. Casket bearers are her four sons, Charles, Paul, David and John Williams, and close friend of the family, Daniel Gran.
