Sylvia V. Bruegger, 101, Wabasha

Sylvia V. Bruegger, age 101, of Wabasha, died Wednesday, June 6, 2018. She was born August 4, 1916 to Harry and Victoria (Joachim) Martin on the Martin family farm near Beaver in the Whitewater Valley. For her to attend high school, she went to live with her brother and his family in Wabasha. After graduating from Wabasha High School she attended Winona Teachers College where she received a BA degree in teaching. In 1972 she received her Master’s degree from Winona State College. Sylvia taught in rural schools throughout the area, beginning at Greenfield School, located between Wabasha and Kellogg. She later taught in schools located at Oronoco, Hammond, Reads Landing, Dumfries, Urne, WI and finally in Pepin, WI. She retired in 1982.
Sylvia married John A. Bruegger June 21, 1941 in Wabasha. Together they farmed in rural Wabasha. John died November 13, 1993. Sylvia was a faithful and active member of Wabasha United Church of Christ. She and Nadine Carr started the pie baking fundraiser for the church over thirty years ago. She was a past member and Worthy Matron of the Eastern Star. She belonged to the Retired Rural Teachers Association. For many years she was the leader for the Pepin Hill 4H and directed their one-act plays. She and her husband, John, belonged to the Wabasha County Farm Bureau for many years. Sylvia was also very active in many other community organizations.
Her interests included travelling throughout the United States and the world, reading, sewing and quilting. She also enjoyed being a member of her 500 card club and she enjoyed her sewing club gals for over 50 years. Her greatest joy was spending time with her loving family. She had a very positive outlook on life and always seeing the good in everyone. She will be dearly missed by her family and those that knew her.
Sylvia is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, John and Margaretta Bruegger, Snowmass, CO, William Bruegger, Buffalo City, WI, Jim and Diane Bruegger, Alma, WI; daughter and son-in-law, Kathryn and Keith Webb, Prior Lake, MN; foster daughter, Doris Kent, Phoenix, AZ; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; grand-nieces and grand-nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, John, son, Robert, daughter-in-law, Stephanie Bruegger, one sister and three brothers.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, June 15, 2018 at 11:00am at the United Church of Christ in Wabasha with the Reverend James Clausen officiating. Interment will follow at Riverview Cemetery in Wabasha. Casket bearers will be Bill Bruegger, Jim Bruegger, Garrett and Travis Webb, Bob Bruegger and John Bruegger. Honorary bearers will be Gale Martin, Brad Martin, Richard Dunn, William Russell and George Russell. Family and friends may call at the Abbott Funeral Home on Thursday, June 14, 2018 from 4-7pm and at the church on Friday one hour before the service.
