Alma-Pepin boys pick up two wins

The Alma-Pepin Eagles boys basketball team picked up two wins last week, starting with a 79-58 victory at Augusta.
The Eagles fell behind in the first quarter, 14-11, but shifted into high gear in the second quarter, outscoring Augusta 24-16 to take a 35-30 lead at the half.
Augusta continued to nip at the Eagles’ heels in the third, but Alma-Pepin came out ahead, 19-18.
The Eagles put up 25 points in the fourth quarter and held Augusta to 10 to secure the 79-58 victory.
Bryce Anibas led with 22 points, followed by Sam Mueller with 19. Logan Carroll recorded 12, and Caiden Haake rounded off the scoring leaders with 11.
Haake led with 8 rebounds, followed by Anibas with 5. Trevor Heit, James Sterry, and Mueller each added 3.
Carroll and Anibas each tallied 2 steals. The Eagles totaled 26 rebounds, 15 assists, 8 steals, and 10 turnovers.
Alma-Pepin shot 13 for 39 from the field, and sank 9 of 15 attempted 3-pointers. They went 15-for-26 from the line.
Haake shot 11-for-12 from the line, followed by Anibas at 9-for-10.
The Eagles hosted Melrose-Mindoro, who led the Dairyland-Large Conference at 9-1, and defeated them 74-69 in an energetic game.
The Eagles took an early lead, picking up 18 to the Mustangs’ 13 in the first quarter.
The Eagles added 22 in the second and held Melrose-Mindoro to 17 to hold a 40-30 lead at the half.
The Mustangs took the third quarter, 22-12, to tie it up at 52.
The Eagles recorded 22 points in the fourth quarter and held Melrose-Mindoro to 17 to take the 74-69 win, giving the Mustangs just their fifth loss of the season.
Four Eagles scored in the double digits, led by Mueller with 20. Anibas put up 18, Carroll 15, and Haake 14.
Haake led with 12 rebounds, followed by Mueller with 6. The Mueller brothers each recorded 4 assists and 1 steal.
The Eagles totaled 23 rebounds, 15 assists, 2 steals, and 8 turnovers.
Alma-Pepin shot 16 for 32 from the field, and sank 9 of 18 attempted 3-pointers. They went 15-for-18 from the line.
Carroll shot 6-for-6 from the line, while Haake went 4-for-5. Anibas shot 3-for-5.
The Eagles visited Eau Claire Immanuel Tuesday, but results were unavailable at press time. They are set to host Saint Croix Central in Pepin on Thursday. See next week’s Courier-Wedge for results.
The Eagles are 8-5 overall and 5-3 in the Dairyland-Small Conference.
