Interim Police Chief Leibfried ends his service

Low pay, odd hours, second guessing, sometimes gunshots, the job of law enforcement officers make them our guardians of our Lewiston community. Our protectors!
Our city of Lewiston saw Interim, Chief of Police, Troy Leibfried step up and take that position when Lewiston no longer had a Chief of Police in place. Yes, Chief Leibfried came forward because he believed in the community and was invested as a part time officer under past Police Chief Mark Dungy in 1997 and knew the priorities of the force. He knew the job, he knew the commitment, he knew the hours and efforts it would take away from his family. But he knew Lewiston was in need and he still stepped forward because he believed in a great community and believed in their protection.
Lewiston was in need when the city was left without a Police Chief when Police Chief Joe Hasting left. Leibfried committed to helping out the city for three months until Lewiston could hire another chief.
That transition was to be a three month process but turned into a sixteen month commitment. Interim Chief Leibfried has been an enforcing protector of Lewiston that will now transition out effective Wednesday, January 14th when the new Chief of Police, Scott Yeiter will take over in his new position as the Lewiston Chief of Police.
Interim Chief Leibfried reflects, “I want to thank the 2014 council for standing behind me, and to thank the Winona County Sheriff office for all of their help during this transition of chiefs.”
With dozens of protests across the country last year after grand jury decisions not to indict officers involved in the deaths of Michael Brown and Eric Garner. Leibfried said, “Even in our small town we began to see a different light of respect for officers. But in Lewiston and the surrounding county we see more people being more supportive and glad to have our presence in place.”
Many residents continue to make sure law enforcement gets the message that they are valued, even though recent words and actions against law enforcement around the country have shown differently.
As we step back and look, we sometimes see that these guys don’t get enough thanks for what they do, keeping us safe and protecting us every single day.
Chief Leibfried shared, “I will certainly miss spending lunch at the elementary school. I loved to go over and eat lunch with the kids. Making friends and letting kids grow up seeing law enforcement in a friendly way. Getting the message that we are still and always be the good guys. That we are here to protect and serve. It’s so important for the children to see us as friends of their community.”
“I think with the current climate we have with the unfortunate events that have taken place, that even in our smaller communities law enforcement continues to spread the message, that we are here to protect.”
“Nothing but smiles and it’s heartwarming for both students and myself when we are in a school situation. I will still be invested in the community but not as the Chief of Police.”
It’s not an easy job. Men and women put on a uniform every day. They put on that badge to go out there and protect and serve. They are not sitting home with their family, they’re out making sure that our community stays safe and come forward in some pretty tragic situations during critical times. And citizens out there care about that.
Thanks Troy Leibfried for all the time and efforts you put forward for Lewiston community.
