Fourth of July storm downs trees, damages buildings in Bennett Valley

A huge feedlot shed just north of Hwy. Z off Hovey Valley Road owned by Scott Werlein was flattened by the storm.

A large pine tree next to the home of Jeff and Lisa Gray was snapped off and another uprooted. An isolated storm that swept through the Bennett Valley area on Thursday, July 4, may have spawned a brief tornado and packed heavy rain and hail.

A tractor and some other equipment were buried under the fallen shed, but no animals were in or near it at the time of the storm.

Roof sections of a large monoslope feedlot shed on the Scott Werlein farm broke apart and were pushed back about 40 feet from where the structure originally stood.

Tree damage was common for many of the homeowners along a roughly three-mile stretch of County Road Z southeast of Mondovi following a Fourth of July storm.

Twisted metal and pieces of wood were piled up in the driveway of Dave and Pam Gray as they cleaned up after last week’s storm. The top of a pine tree in the background is also snapped off and another tree is leaning after nearly being uprooted by the strong winds.

Part of the roof peak on a corn crib at Dave and Pam Gray’s was ripped off. The metal pieces appeared to bounce through their backyard, skip over the garage, and land in the driveway.
