Roman Theisen
Roman C. Theisen, 95, of Theisen Ridge, rural Independence, died Saturday, Dec. 3, 2016, at Mayo Clinic Health System, Eau Claire, after suffering a devastating stroke in the days prior.
Roman was born on May 23, 1921, on Montana Ridge (later known as Theisen Ridge) to Peter and Agnes (Lisowski) Theisen in the same home his father was born. Roman attended the public school on Montana Ridge through the fourth grade. He then attended the Catholic school in Waumandee for two years, boarding at the school during the week and going home on the weekends. After completing the sixth grade, Roman remained at home on the farm and worked alongside his family. Roman continued to run the home farm, first with his father then later with his siblings, particularly his sister, Genevieve, until she wed. He then farmed with his mother until her health failed in her early nineties. After his mother’s health failed, he took over the household duties to include canning, in addition to the farm work.
Roman never married. He felt his best moments in life were when he was in his forties and was able to work hard on the farm. Anyone who knew Roman
knew that visiting was something he loved to do. His memory of past local history was impressive. His lifetime of documenting facts that interested him filled his home.
Roman is survived by his sister, Rose Ann Wiench of Pigeon Falls; nieces and nephews, Lynn (Mark) Finner of Trempealeau, Rodney Wiench of Pigeon Falls, Mary (Dan) Bragger, Mary (Edward) Anderson, Emil Rotering all of Independence, Armilla (Rich) Lyga of Arcadia, Peter Theisen of Mondovi, Eugene (Vicky) Rotering of Independence, Diane (Andrew) Elvaker of Elk City, Okla., Sandee Rotering of Independence, and their families. In addition, he will be greatly missed by his loyal companion, Fido.
Roman was preceded in death by brothers, Roy and Ralph, who died in childhood, John and Albert Theisen; sister, Genevieve Rotering; brothers-in-law, Herman Wiench and Mathias Rotering; nephew, Edward Rotering (in childhood); niece, Katherine Theisen (in infancy).
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 10, at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Independence, with Very Rev. Woodrow H. Pace officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. followed by a rosary, at Edison Funeral Home, Independence, and one hour prior to the Mass at the church on Saturday.
