Duane Francis Deming

Duane Francis Deming, 86, of Plainview, passed away on Sunday, November 12, 2023, at Green Prairie Rehabilitation Center in Plainview. He was born at home on March 24, 1937, in rural Plainview to Leo and Ina (Irish) Deming. Duane attended country school and Plainview Public Schools, graduating in 1955 from Plainview High School. While in high school he played on two champion football teams in 1954 and 1955. He went on to attend Dunwoody Institute for a short course on refrigeration in Minneapolis. On September 21, 1957, he married Margie Balcome at St. Joachim’s Catholic Church in Plainview, they were blessed with five daughters.
Duane was a dairy farmer for more than 50 years and was named State of Minnesota Star Farmer in 1955. He was very active in dairy organizations including, serving on the Board of Directors for Dairy Herd Improvement Association, and served 14 years on the Board of Directors of Plainview Milk Products Creamery Association, he was also named Outstanding Young Farmer.
Duane was an active member of St. Joachim’s Catholic Church where he was a member of the Knights of Columbus, served as a Reader, Trustee, Eucharist Minister, and served on the Parish Council and Advisory Board. He was also an Honorable Life Member of the Plainview Elgin Saddle Club and served as President of the club for three terms. He enjoyed raising horses and showed Registered Quarter Horses. Duane especially enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and enjoyed listening to classical and country music.
Duane is survived by his five daughters, Cindy (Gary) Wiebusch of Rochester, Laura “Lori” (Dan) Klassen of Alexandria, Sharon (Peter) Schouweiler and Angela (Steven) Wolf both of Plainview, and Suzanne “Sue” (John) Ellingson of Edina; twelve grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren; sisters and brothers, Nancy Tibor of Rochester, Joanne (Doug) Johnson of Racine, John (Alice) Deming, Tom (Mary) Deming both of Plainview, and sister-in-law, Margo Deming of Rochester. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son Joseph, a brother David, a sister Mary Ellen, and two brothers-in-law, Clifford Tibor, and Gaylord Alm.
The Funeral Mass will be at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, November 17, at St. Joachim’s Catholic Church in Plainview with Father Tom Loomis officiating. Burial will follow the service St. Joachim’s Catholic Cemetery in Plainview. Friends and family may visit on Thursday, November 16, from 4;00 – 7:00 p.m. at Schleicher Funeral Homes, Plainview Chapel and one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.
