Prep Baseball Round-up: Eleva-Strum is up as season winds down

Eleva-Strum leads Dairyland Conference with league season halfway done

Championship teams always get the key wins they need.

And so far the Eleva-Strum High School Baseball Team has been getting those wins this season, enough to put them atop the Dairyland Conference with an 8-1 record.

E-S downed Eau Claire Immanuel Lutheran at home Saturday, May 7 by a 3-2 score. The Cardinals, 10-2 overall, also have defeated Independence/Gilmanton by a 7-5 score, Blair-Taylor 8-5, 11-5 over Alma/Pepin and Cochrane-Fountain City 3-1. Their lone losses have been close too, 4-6 to C-FC in a doubleheader on Tuesday, May 3 and 2-1 at Arcadia earlier on.

Another big league game awaits Tuesday, May 10 vs. Whitehall at Spangberg Field in Strum. The Norse are just a game back of E-S in the standings at 7-2 as is Immanuel. Indy/Gilmanton is 9-3.

The Cardinals complete the season sweep of Blair-Taylor with an 11-1 win over the Wildcats back on April 29 and a 19-3 win at Augusta on April 28.

Augusta was able to bounce back from the bad loss to E-S to get several wins last week to even their overall record at 6-6. AHS helped out Central in the team standings by beating Independence/Gilmanton 15-14 in eight at home Monday, May 3. The Beavers were able to score 15 runs on just five hits thanks to a whopping 10 Indee/Panther errors plus 14 walks. They also survived a nine-run sixth inning by scoring five runs in the bottom of the sixth and three more in their last at bats in the seventh and then breaking a 14-14 tie in the eighth. Brennen King was the winning pitcher and C. Leslin had an RBI-double for Augusta. The very next day Augusta routed Lincoln 22-1 on the road. The Beavers had 13 hits led by S. Harris with four, and King with three. Z. Harris led the team in runs with five and RBIs with four. King and K. Laxson each hit doubles. King was the winning pitcher. Augusta ended last week splitting a doubleheader at Melrose-Mindoro, winning Game 1 by a 12-8 score but losing Game 2 6-3. King had three hits and four RBIs in the second game while Joe Shong getting two hits, including a double while N. Tyalor had two RBIs and Z. Harris scored three times. Taylor was the winning pitcher.

Also at 6-6 (4-5 in the Western Cloverbelt Conference) is Osseo-Fairchild. The Thunder took a tough 10-0 loss at home Friday, May 6 in five innings to Bloomer, who is competing the Western Cloverbelt Conference title along with undefeated Eau Claire Regis. But before that game, the Thunder split at home with Thorp on Monday, May 2, winning Game 1 by a 9-8 score before losing Game 7-4. Ashton Oliver got the win in Game 1, not only as the pitcher but also the winning RBI. O-F took advantage of five Cardinal errors, especially late when they scored five runs in their last at bats. O-F then walloped Cadott at home on May by a 16-0 score as Lucas Frase, Tryggve Korger, and Spencer Osmonson all had multi-hit games. Osseo-Fairchild had nine hits in the ballgame.

The Thunder has just one home game left this season, May 17 vs. Durand. They have another non-conference game on Monday against the new Black River Falls/Fall Creek co-op in Fall Creek beginning at 5 p.m.
