Bernice Kern

Bernice Kern, 93, of Arkansaw, Wis., died Saturday July, 1, 2017.
Bernice Hope was born Sept. 24, 1923, in Waterville Township, Pepin County, Wisconsin. Bernice was the first child born to Clive and Delight (Della) McMahon Metcalf. Bernice graduated from Durand High School. She later graduated from River Falls Teachers College.
On May 15, 1943, she and Vernon Kern were married, at her home in Porcupine Valley by her father, Clive. They lived all their married life in Arkansaw, where they raised three children, Sharon, Diana and James.
As her children were older, Bernice taught at Big Coulee and Sabylund schools. Later, she was the office manager for Vernon at the Durand Canning Company, which later became Faribault Foods in Mondovi.
She was active all her life in the Community of Christ. Her faith was a very important part of her life. She filled many roles in her lifetime with the church. She served as Sunday School secretary, Bible School youth leader, and women’s leader.  
Her family was precious to her. Her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-granddaughter, Allyson, brought her the greatest joy.
Finding faith in a flower garden, her music, books and plants brought her contentment. She was fond of watching and feeding birds.
Bernice is survived by her children, Sharon (Lynn) Fleishauer, Diana (James) Tulip, Mary Kern; grandchildren, Gary (Teresa) Fleishauer, Tracy Weber, Teri Jo (Dennis) Hartung, Jeff (Jenny) Tulip, Katrina (Bill) Hake, Rob (Becky) Kern; great-grandchildren, James Martin, Jake (Andrea) Fleishauer, Josh (Larah) Fleishauer, Justin Fleishauer, Sam Klingbeil, Nate Klingbeil, Brenton (Erin) Hartung, Brady Hartung, Christopher (Miranda) Tulip, Cody Tulip, TJ Tulip, Marvin Kern; great-great-granddaughter, Allyson Fleishauer; great-great-step grandchildren, Larry and Mikaila.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Vernon Kern; son, James Kern; grandson, Darren Tulip; sister, Jerri Smith; brother-in-law, Roy Smith; niece, Deborah Darmon.
A joyful celebration of life will be held Thursday, July 6, at Community of Christ Church, Arkansaw. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m., the service to follow at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Arkansaw Memorial Cemetery.
