Doris Agnes Tollefson Sather, formerly of Eleva, Wis., passed away peacefully, surrounded by her children, on Saturday May 5, 2018, at Grace Lutheran River Pines Nursing Home in Eau Claire.
She was born May 28, 1924, to the late George Tollefson and Ethel Emberson Tollefson on a farm in the Eleva Valley, where she attended Sands and Jensen elementary schools and later Eau Claire High School.
Doris (Aggie) loved life and embraced it to the fullest. She was a great cook and a founding editor of a local cooking magazine called “A Taste of Home.” She was everyone’s friend. When her travel days were over, she continued to add to her vast salt and pepper shaker collection from around the world by the gifts of family and friends. Doris was well known for her Norwegian lefse baking skills; a package of Doris Sather’s lefse was a treasured gift sought after by many. She was an avid volunteer and served her local branch of the American Legion Auxiliary for over 30 years.
Doris was a beautiful woman, filled with high spirit and genuine concern for others. As a young woman, she traveled from her childhood home in Eleva to the big city of Chicago to help pack rations for the war effort. Returning home, Doris worked at Presto Industries and eventually settled on a natural career for her personality, serving others as a food service supervisor at the Holiday Inn, both in Eau Claire.
Doris is survived by her six children, Dennis (Carol) Sather of Strum, David (Claudia) Sather of Wabasha, Minn., Luanne (Steve) Hawkins of South Lyon, Mich., Susan Larson of Greenacres, Fla., Dean (Nancy) Sather of Stillwater, Minn., Darrell (MaryJo) Sather of Eleva; 15 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild.
Doris was preceded in death by the love of her life, Orville Howard Sather; her parents; five brothers and three sisters.
Doris was a lifelong member of Eleva Lutheran Church, in Eleva, where she will be laid to rest on May 25. Friends and family are encouraged to bring their favorite Doris stories and help celebrate her life with visitation from 2 to 4 p.m., followed by a memorial service.
The Sather family wishes to thank the staff and friends at Just Like Home Assisted Living in Chetek, Strum Area Health and Rehab in Strum, Grace Lutheran River Pines Nursing Home and St. Croix Hospice of Eau Claire for their many acts of kindness and care for our beloved mother. A bright spark has left the earth and is now lighting up the heavens with love and laughter. Until we meet again Mom, we’ll be loving you.
