Dorothy Tomten

Dorothy (Giese) Tomten, 92, of Winona, Minn., passed away on Sunday, Dec. 10, 2017, at Roger Metz Manor memory care facility, in Winona, with loving family by her side.
Dorothy was born April 8, 1925, in Mondovi, Wis., the last of six children to Henry and Amelia (Esbach) Giese. She was born and raised in Mondovi, baptized and confirmed at the Methodist Church, and graduated with the 1944 class of Mondovi High School.
On June 15, 1947, Dorothy married Lloyd O. Tomten, in Mondovi. To this union one daughter and three sons were born, Luanne, Larry, Lee and Roger. They resided in Mondovi until 1966, when the family moved to Winona to open a branch store for Mississippi Welders Supply Co.
Dorothy enjoyed her secretarial career at Fisher Auto Co., Mondovi, Mississippi Welders Supply Co., Mondovi and later Winona, and the American Red Cross of Winona.
She was an avid volunteer and proudly gave of her time to her home church organizations. While in Winona, she especially enjoyed working with United Methodist in Mission. Much of her time was dedicated to Boy Scouts of America (den mother), Watkins Home Auxiliary, Rivertown Lions Club, Green Thumb, and American Red Cross. She loved spending time and making memories with her family and at the family cabin in northern Wisconsin on the East Fork of the Chippewa River.
Dorothy will be sadly missed by her children, Luanne (Martin) Swanson of Mondovi, Larry Tomten of Las Cruces, N.M., Lee (Janet) Tomten of Las Cruces, N.M., Roger (Elizabeth) Tomten of Stillwater, Minn.; six grandchildren, Scott (Tricia) Swanson of Superior, Wis., Erin (Francis) Brenner of Houston, Texas, Erika (Peter) Haberman of Moorhead, Minn., Katie Tomten of Cambridge, Mass., Michael and Andrew Tomten of Stillwater, Minn.; four great-grandchildren, Morgan, Hannah and Courtney Brenner of Houston, Texas, and Claire Haberman of Moorhead, Minn.; sister-in-law, Beatrice Tomten of La Crosse, Wis.; several nieces and nephews, other relatives and dear friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lloyd; sisters and brothers-in-law, Marion (Orrin) Butler, Mabel (Harold) Johnson; brothers and sisters-in-law. Raymond Giese, Lyman (Esther) Giese, Charles (Irene) Giese; sister-in-law and brothers-in-law, Mildred (Peter) Eide, Oscar (Mildred) Tomten and Eugene Tomten.
Mother will be missed beyond words. She was the foundation of our family and the example she set of how to live life with love, faith, grace, kindness, integrity and strength will live on with us for life. Rest in Peace—We Love You.
The family would like to thank Roger Metz Manor Memory Care and Winona Health Area Hospice Services for the wonderful loving care they provided our Mom, Dorothy.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 19, at Renewing Grace Fellowship Church, corner of High Street and Broadway Street West, with Rev. Kathy Schuler officiating. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery, Mondovi, Wis. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. at the church on Tuesday.
Memorial donations are preferred to Roger Metz Manor, 875 Mankato Ave., Winona, Minn. 55987.
