Duane Urness

Duane Merlin Urness, 86, of the town of Drammen, died on Sunday, May 7, 2017, at his son’s home, surrounded by his family.
He was born on March 7, 1931, in the township of Canton, Buffalo County, to Knute and Luella (Mahlum) Urness. He attended grade school in Gilman Valley, Dugan Valley in Buffalo County, and Rock Falls in Dunn County. He graduated from Mondovi High School in 1950 and went on to River Falls College for 1½ years. Duane enlisted in the Army in November of 1951 and was released from active duty in September of 1954, during which he was stationed in Japan for 22 months. After the Army, he worked at several odd jobs until the fall of 1958. He hauled can and bulk milk and worked at a couple of dairy plants.
He was united in marriage to Carol Burger on May 3, 1959, at the Trinity of Norden parsonage. Duane started farming on his own in the fall of 1958. He farmed there until the fall of 1962. He then rented the Gilman farm in December 1962 and farmed there until 1967. He then sold his share of the cattle to his brother, Merle. Duane then went to work for Land O’Lakes, Inc. as a dairy fieldman until 1990. He then moved to Dairy Maid Corp of Augusta and was there until 1998. He continued in the industry until his retirement in 2001.
He was a longtime member of Central Lutheran Church, Mondovi. Duane enjoyed attending his morning coffee group. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He also loved metal machining. His grandchildren were some of his greatest joys.
He is survived by his two sons, David (Shannon) Urness of Mondovi, Michael (Karli) Urness of Phoenix, Ariz.; five grandchildren, Brandon, Tanner, Hannah, Abbye and Tyler; five siblings, LaVerne (Dorothy) Urness, Mavis Erickson, Leslie (Darlene) Urness, Merle Urness, Carol (John) Endle; many other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Carol; parents; two brothers, Kenneth and Russell Urness; two sisters-in-law, Lela and Shirley; brother-in-law, Dale.
Funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 12, at Central Lutheran Church, Mondovi, with Reverend Rolf Morck officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hill Cemetery, Eau Claire. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service.
