E-S baseball takes third win of the season

The Eleva-Strum baseball team marked another notch in the victory column this week as the squad topped Melrose-Mindoro by a single run, despite falling to Immanuel Lutheran later in the week.
On Tuesday, May 5, the Cardinals took to the road against Melrose-Mindoro, hoping to take a victory over the Mustangs. But Melrose-Mindoro had other plans scoring one run in the first inning that went unanswered until the third.
Eleva-Strum brought two runners home, but the Mustangs were right behind them. They brought in a single runner to level the score at two apiece. It wasn’t long until the Cardinals brought home a third runner, pulling ahead by one point. Tensions rose as the Mustangs fought to score again. In the sixth inning, Melrose-Mindoro tied the score at three each. The game came down to the last inning. Eleva-Strum brought home a single run and held the Mustangs from scoring to take the win 4-3.
Kyle Maug, Caleub Watkins, and Jacob and Mitchell Hong all scored once in the game. Shane Larson led RBIs with two. Mitchell Hong led stolen bases with three, followed by Jacob Hong with two.
Shane Larson turned out a solid game on the pitcher’s mound, throwing four strikeouts with two walks in five-and-a-half innings of work. Drew Christianson also contributed with two strikeouts and zero walks in one and a half innings.
Two days later, the Cardinals traveled to Bollinger Field at UW-Eau Claire to take on the Eau Claire Immanuel Lancers.
Eleva-Strum came out with confidence, but the Lancers blew them to pieces. An iron-clad Immanuel defense kept the Cardinals from scoring a single run, while their impressive offense buried Eleva-Strum, 10-0.
The Cardinals are in the thick of a very busy week of baseball. E-S played at Independence/Gilmanton on Monday, May 11, and hosted Augusta on Tuesday, May 12. The squad will also head to Durand on Thursday, May 14, and will return to its home field on Friday, May 15, to face Whitehall.
