High-speed chase leads to arrest of two local men
Multiple charges are pending against two men who led officers on a high-speed chase, which at times exceeded 100 miles per hour, before they were apprehended east of Mondovi.
According to the Buffalo County Sheriff’s Department, the driver, Austin Timothy James Reid, 19, of Eleva, and a passenger, Allen M. Schultz, 22, of Gilmanton, were taken into custody on Saturday, Jan. 23, after leading officers on a chase through parts of Buffalo, Trempealeau and Eau Claire counties.
The chase started when a Buffalo County deputy attempted to stop the 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix on U.S. Highway 10 near Whitworth Road for a speeding violation. Instead of pulling over, the vehicle took off at a high rate of speed headed eastbound on Hwy. 10.
Following a lengthy chase, stop sticks were deployed on County Highway WW near U.S. Highway 10. Reid swerved to avoid the stop sticks, which caused the vehicle to travel into the southbound ditch where the chase ended.
Schultz fled the scene on foot, but was apprehended by deputies. During the foot pursuit, police say he dropped a BB gun that resembled a real handgun. Reid remained in the vehicle.
Reid was transported to an area hospital for medical clearance before being released into police custody.
Both Reid and Schultz were booked into the Buffalo County Jail.
Reid faces felony charge for fleeing an officer and a misdemeanor charge for possession of drug paraphernalia. Schultz has been charged with a misdemeanor count of resisting arrest.
Reid was scheduled to appear in Buffalo County Court on Jan. 27. Schultz has a court date set for Feb. 3.
Also assisting during the pursuit were the Mondovi Police Department, Osseo Police Department, Wisconsin State Patrol, Trempealeau County Sheriff’s Department, Gold Cross Ambulance and Eleva First Responders.
