Senior Mattie Mahlum knocked down a bucket in the paint. Mahlum had a game-high 23 points for Mondovi as the Lady Buffs held off a late rally from Spring Valley to take the 57-55 victory.

Lady Buffs beat Spring Valley after intense battle to notch first win of season

Last week, our girls played two games, one on Tuesday, Dec. 9, against Aquinas, and one on Thursday, Dec. 11, against Spring Valley.

The girls came out on Tuesday night ready to face on one of the highest-ranked girls basketball teams in Division 4. At the start of the first quarter, the girls took the lead. Winning by two or four points most of the quarter, the Lady Buffs ended the first quarter down by only four points, 14-10. In the second quarter, Aquinas seemed to kick in the intensity and took command, ending the first half with a score of 33-14.

When the girls came out after halftime, they held their heads high and fought back as hard as they could. Aquinas would not let the Lady Buffs catch up though, and Mondovi lost the game 66-26.

The leading scorers that night were Mattie Mahlum with 10 points, Haley Poeschel with five points, and Makenzy Christopherson with four points.

Two nights later, the Lady Buffs faced the Spring Valley Cardinals, and they were hungry for a win.

The first quarter started off strong with the girls taking the lead early on. That quarter ended with a tied score of 12-12, but the girls were not yet satisfied. They went on to score 14 more points in the second quarter, extending their lead by the end of the second half to 26-19.

The Lady Buffs knew the second half was not going to be easy, but they were determined to come out on top. Spring Valley started to put up more of a fight, but the Buffaloes refused to back down. With about 20 seconds left in the game, Spring Valley managed to tie the game 55-55.

After a trip down the court, one of the Cardinals fouled Mahlum, who got to step up to the free-throw line for some bonus shots. The senior calmly knocked down both shots, bringing the Buffaloes back up on top 57-55, a score that would stand through the final buzzer after Mondovi locked down Spring Valley on defense.

Mahlum led the way for the Lady Buffs with 23 points followed by Christopherson with 14 and Poeschel with nine.

As of last week, Mahlum’s efforts put her in the top spot in the Dunn-St. Croix Conference for scoring at 16.5 points per game.

Continuing their DSC slate, the girls made the trip to Boyceville on Tuesday, Dec. 16, and will host Colfax on Friday, Dec. 19.
