Melvin Becker

Melvin E. Becker, 82, of Edgerton, died Friday, April 20, 2018, at St. Mary’s Hospital, Madison.
He was born in Mondovi, Wis. on Feb. 10, 1936, the son of Otto Louis and Junice Ortha (Thompson) Becker, and was a 1954 graduate of Mondovi High School.
Melvin married Bonita “Bonnie” Andrus on March 2, 1958, in Osseo. He served in the U.S. Army between the Korean and Vietnam Wars, having been stationed in Washington, California, and the Middle East. Upon discharge, he returned to the family farm in Mondovi. He and Bonnie moved to the Edgerton area, where Melvin continued to farm, raising tobacco, as well as working at Dorsey Trailer for 34 years. He also owned and operated 3 B’s Tavern outside of Janesville for 27 years. Melvin was a hard-working man, a longtime member and supporter of the Edgerton Lions Club. He and Bonnie also served as King and Queen of the Tobacco Heritage Days in 1998. In addition, he enjoyed playing cards, cribbage, taking trips “up-North” visiting relatives, hunting and fishing, and being with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Bonnie; children, Cheri Becker of Loyal, Debbie (John) Schneider of Evansville, Lori (Dave) Knutson and Barb (Rod) Hanson, both of Janesville, Brian (Denise) Becker of Eau Claire, and Jamie (Renae) Becker of Edgerton; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; sister, Geraldine (Bud) DeBoer of Kenosha; brothers and sisters-in-law, Linda, Dwayne, Siri, Clay and Spencer; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Norman “Tom” Becker; siblings, Charley, Ralph (Joyce), Leona (Vern), Jeanette (Warren), Clement (Shirley), and Frances (LaVern).
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 27, 2018, at the Appel Ehlert Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 315 Lord St. (Hwy 51) Edgerton. Rev. Jerry Pribbenow will officiate. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery with full military honors. Visitation will take place on Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Appel Ehlert Funeral Home and again on Friday from 10 a.m. until the hour of service.
