Mondovi football standout Krumrie earns long-awaited Hall of Fame nod

A local prep football star who went on to play for the University of Wisconsin and played and coached in the NFL will be a part of the College Football Hall of Fame Class of 2016.

Tim Krumrie played linebacker for Mondovi High School in the 1970s, attracting the attention of UW coaches who recruited him to join the Badgers in 1979.

Now Krumrie will join nine other Wisconsin players in the College Football Hall of Fame, finally attaining the game’s highest honor nearly a quarter-century after becoming eligible.

The National Football Foundation announced on Friday, Jan. 8, the list of 16 members—14 players and two coaches—that comprise this year’s Hall of Fame class. Krumrie, 55, and his fellow HOF classmates will be honored at the NFF Annual Awards Dinner set to take place at the Waldorf Astoria in New York on Dec. 6, 2016.

With his selection, Krumrie becomes the first UW defensive player in the College Football Hall of Fame. He joins other recent Badger selections in UW Director of Athletics and former head coach Barry Alvarez (2010) and running back Ron Dayne (2013), who also claimed a Heisman Trophy.

When he first started playing for the Badgers Krumrie was a linebacker before shifting to nose guard. He then went on to lead UW in tackles all four years, never missing a start in 46 games. Krumrie still ranks No. 3 in UW history with 444 career stops, the most ever by a defensive lineman. He also had 276 solo tackles, which continues to be the Badgers’ career record.

Among the awards Krumrie received during his decorated college career were First Team All-American (consensus selection) in 1981, three time all-Big Ten Conference honors and Defensive MVP of the 1982 Independence Bowl, during which the Badgers recorded their first-ever win in a bowl game.

Krumrie was also a member of Wisconsin’s wrestling team for two years and was tabbed for the UW Athletic Hall of Fame in 1999.

He went on to continue his success at the collegiate level in the NFL after being drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in 1983. He helped the Bengals reach Super Bowl XXIII and was a twice a Pro Bowl selection.

Krumrie capped his 11-year NFL career with the Bengals in 1994, recording 1,017 tackles and 34.5 sacks.

He then hit the sideline as an assistant coach with the Bengals, Buffalo Bills and Kansas City Chiefs for 15 seasons.

Krumrie currently resides in Steamboat Springs, Colorado.
