Mondovi girls endure tough week vs. Aquinas, rival Colfax
by Gabby Scott, student writer
The Mondovi Lady Buffs took on La Crosse Aquinas on Monday night, Nov. 30, and hosted conference foe Colfax in their Dunn-St. Croix opener on Thursday, Dec. 3. Starting off the week back from Thanksgiving break, the girls were ready to roll, but both games ended with lopsided results in favor of Mondovi’s opponents.
At Aquinas last Monday, the Buffaloes started out slowly in the first 18 minutes, scoring just seven points at the break. Many fast breaks and quick passes led to 44 points for Aquinas in the first half, leaving the Lady Buffs staring at a 37-point deficit.
After halftime the Lady Buffs wanted to try and turn the game around with more intensity and heart. But Aquinas held its side of the court strong, letting the Buffs score just four points in the second half, leading to a 69-11 result for host Aquinas.
Leading scorers for the Buffaloes were juniors Miranda Lund with four points and Sami Wulff with three.
Aquinas was led by Kyah Steiner with 15 points followed by Whittni Rezin with 11.
With three non-conference games under their belt to start the year with a 1-2 result, Mondovi kicked off DSC action against the Colfax Vikings last Thursday night.
The Lady Buffs were determined to set the pace with a strong start, but the Buffaloes weren’t up to speed with what Colfax brought to the court.
Scoring only 19 points in the first half, the girls were behind by 13, 32-19, come halftime. Mondovi knew what they wanted to throw out at Colfax in the second half and did exactly that. While slowing down the Vikings’ pace, the Lady Buffs managed to toss up another 19 points against Colfax but couldn’t corral their shooters enough to cut into their lead en route to the 70-38 loss.
Lund again led the Buffaloes’ scorers with 13 points followed by McKenzie Akina with nine. Anna Accola chipped in with two steals for the night.
The Vikings were led by Dempsey Fogarty with 18 points followed by Ally Heidorn with 13.
The Lady Buffs continued DSC play this week, traveling to Elk Mound on Tuesday, Dec. 8. The girls will host Elmwood/Plum City on Friday, Dec. 11.
