On Monday, April 6, many eager young baseball players with the Schlosser Sugar Farm’s 12U team were excited to try out the new Mondovi Youth Baseball practice facility. The facility is located in the former horse shoe area near Linse Field at Memorial Park.
The project moved quickly over the weekend, with help from community members and volunteers. Mondovi Youth Baseball Association (MYBA) Board member Angela Schlosser attended the practice, stating the first load of lime was brought in on Thursday, and the project was completed by Saturday.
“The goal was to get this done as fast as possible to hold practice,” Schlosser said. “We can now have two practices going at the same time.”
Schlosser said that there are a total of 180 students involved within the program, from Mondovi and Gilmanton. Ages range from age four, all the way into eighth grade.
Although the MYBA purchased a majority of the equipment, the organization said other businesses and community members donated materials and time.
“A big thanks goes out to all the community members and volunteers that helped with this project,” MYBA President Ryan Vollmer said.
Vollmer also said the association is thankful for the City Council’s participation in the project.
“We thank the City Council and Dan for the support, time and effort placed on this,” Vollmer said. “I just want to thank each and every person involved.”
This weekend, the area was covered with lime screenings and batting cages were installed, as well as the bullpens. There was also a utility shed moved on the site.
“We still need to put our sign up, rules and regulations and put a few more finishing touches,” Schlosser said. “We will be looking to add a couple picnic tables and benches for the batting cage area.”
Treasurer Tim Schlosser noted when the area is not in use by the MYBA, it can be used by the public.
“For the community we believe this is a start to improve our parks,” Tim Schlosser said. “It provides a safe and structured place for kids to play and practice. Maybe by MYBA doing this project it will inspire other groups in the community to take part in improving the parks.”
