Senior Mattie Mahlum took a shot in the early going as Mondovi faced Independence on Monday night, Jan. 26. Mahlum scored a team-high 15 points in the game and the Lady Buffs held on for the 50-47 victory.

Two more wins and a loss for Lady Buffaloes

The Mondovi Lady Buffaloes created a winning streak for themselves this past week. After beating Cadott the week before, the girls won two more games last week—one against Independence on the Monday, Jan. 26, and one against Elmwood/Plum City the next day.

Last Monday the girls hosted Independence, who is undefeated in its own conference. The match turned out to be a very nerve-wracking one; the game was unpredictable and nobody could see who would come out on top.

The Buffaloes ended their first quarter down 16-10, but they decided they were not going to take it and went on to score 14 points the next quarter while holding Independence to eight, resulting in a tie game, 24-24, at the half.

The girls came back out ready to win the game, but the score remained very close. At the end of the third quarter, the game was still tied, this time 36-36. By the time the fourth quarter came around, the girls decided they’d had enough. Independence had some poorly-timed fouls and our girls put in their free throws, helping edge out Independence by three points for the 50-47 win.

Mattie Mahlum scored 15 points that night, closely followed by Makenzy Christopherson with 14 and Amanda Rud with 11.

The girls had little time to rest before their next game, since it was the following day in Elmwood against the Elmwood/Plum City Wolves. The last time the Lady Buffs faced the Wolves, they lost by 10. This time, the girls were ready to take the game for themselves.

Once again, the girls started the game down in the first quarter, but once they found their rhythm in the second quarter, they took the lead and never gave it back, winning the game 36-16.

Mahlum and Christopherson both led the team with seven points that game, followed by Rud with six.

The girls then had two days to prepare for their game against Saint Croix Central on Friday, Jan. 30. SCC came to Mondovi this time, having beaten our Lady Buffs by almost 40 the last time they played them.

The Lady Buffaloes put up a huge fight this time and managed to hold SCC to only 34 points. The Lady Buffaloes scored 22 points, making for a 12-point difference in the end.

Mahlum and Christopherson each scored six points followed by Haley Poeschel and Bailey Van Den Heuvel with four points each.

The girls have a longer break until their next game against Spring Valley on Thursday, Feb. 5. Their next games will then be against Boyceville on Feb. 10 and at Colfax on the 13th.
