Two-vehicle accident injures Mondovi woman

A 54-year-old Mondovi woman sustained apparent head injuries after her car was rear-ended just north of Mondovi on Monday, Nov. 9.

According to chief deputy Colin Severson of the Buffalo County Sheriff’s Department, Vicky Schmidtknecht was northbound on State Highway 37 just before 3 p.m. when she slowed to turn into her driveway. That’s when the 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix Schmidtknecht was driving was rear-ended by a second northbound vehicle, a 2008 Pontiac Grand Prix driven by 24-year-old Brittany E. Nord, also of Mondovi.

The force of the crash sent the vehicle Schmidtknecht was driving into the southbound ditch while Nord’s car came to a rest on the northbound shoulder.

Schmidtknecht was transported via Mondovi Ambulance to an Eau Claire hospital for evaluation of non-life threatening injuries. Nord was not injured in the accident, Severson said.

Investigation by authorities showed that Nord failed to notice Schmidtknecht was slowing down to turn. Nord was cited for following too closely, Severson said.

Minor traffic delays were reported on Hwy. 37 following the crash.

The Mondovi Fire Department and the Mondovi Police Department also assisted at the scene of the accident.

Schmidtknecht’s vehicle was removed by the owner; Nord’s car was towed from the scene by Bauer’s Auto Service.
