Mondovi girls start off week slow, but turn it around with thrilling win over E/PC

The Mondovi Lady Buffs took on the Elk Mound Mounders on Tuesday, Dec. 8, heading to Elk Mound for their second Dunn-St. Croix Conference game of the season.
The Mondovi girls had a tough time against the Mounders in the first half, putting up only 11 points compared to the Mounders’ 29. In the first half, free throws were crucial for the Lady Buffs and they quickly added up.
The Lady Buffs refocused in the locker room during halftime and came out onto the floor ready to dominate. Yet Elk Mound’s strong defense only allowed the Lady Buffs 16 points, resulting in a final score of 63-27 in favor of the Mounders.
A bright spot for the Lady Buffs came at the free throw line where Mondovi took advantage of some sloppy defense by Elk Mound to convert 8 of 10 foul shots.
Leading scorers for the Lady Buffs were Miranda Lund with 10 and McKenzie Akina with eight. Carly Buchholz lead the team in steals with four.
Leading scorers for the Mounders were Elizabeth Fasbender with 18 and right behind her were Sarah Winchester and Madysen Borofka both with 10.
With only one day to regroup the Lady Buffs took on Elmwood/Plum City on Friday, Dec. 11, in another fight for a DSC win.
Mondovi knew how much they were craving a win since they started their season off with one, but haven’t seen one since. Starting out the second half neck-and-neck, the Lady Buffs knew that every shot they took needed to go through the net. The Lady Buffs trailed E/PC 21-17 going into the locker room, and they still had the hype to improve what they needed to.
Coming out of the locker room, the Lady Buffs jumped to their opportunity on the offensive end by coming back and leading the game 35-31. With time running out, they only took safe shots and played rock-solid defense. With about seven seconds left in the game, E/PC threw up a 3-pointer narrow the gap, 35-34. Mondovi took the ball out of bounds with only four seconds remaining and worked to reach the other end without letting the Wolves score. Getting the ball in and keeping it safe the buzzer went off, resulting in a one-point Mondovi win 35-34.
Leading scorers for the Buffaloes were Haley Poeschel with 13 and Anna Accola with seven. Poeschel led the team in assists with five and Accola led the team in steals with four.
Leading scorers for E/PC were Cheyanne Catura with 16 and MiKayla Afdahl with six.
This week the Mondovi girls will travel to Glenwood City on Thursday, Dec. 17, before taking a break for Christmas.
