New playground at Eleva park becomes reality

Volunteers, including Zayvier’s Chicken Chase race organizer Nick Preston (left), set a climbing structure in place to be attached to the playground as it was assembled on Thursday, May 19. Around 30 volunteers converged on Memorial Park to help reps from Lee Recreation of Cambridge complete the new playground equipment in about a day and a half. The playground will be officially opened and dedicated in memory of Zayvier Barnes this Saturday morning, June 4, prior to the Zayvier’s Chicken Chase 5K/10K.

A “Let’s Play” grant of $15,000 from KaBOOM!/DPS helped those behind the Memorial Park renovation project reach their goal more quickly, allowing the new playground to be built sooner.

A Lee Recreation rep helped volunteers assemble a climbing structure. The new playground contains several climbing components as well as slides, swings and monkey bars.

A railing was installed as the group made quick progress during the afternoon of the first build day.

Zayvier’s grandmother Linda Wenaas (right) and Pam Emerson helped paint the Memorial Park picnic shelter and picnic tables as part of a larger renovation effort at the park.

After the support posts and platforms for the playground equipment were set, volunteers lifted a tunnel component into place.

Community volunteers (clockwise from left) Staci Zwiefelhofer, Tessa Emerson and Heidi Emerson worked to prepare a handicapped-accessible swing for installation on the afternoon of the first playground build day, May 19.
