Cleanup, recovery from historic flash flood underway

Makeshift roof supports propped up a small barn that was pushed slightly by the powerful floodwaters. Homeowners are continuing to tackle cleanup tasks, receiving an outpouring of assistance from community members, family and friends last weekend.

Water left its mark on several homes in Gilmanton after a flash flood on Thursday, Aug. 11, forced Elk Creek out of its banks. The floodwaters reached as high as the second story of this home just south of the creek, ruining everything on the first floor.

Gilmanton residents were still attempting to dry out prized personal possessions, like these binders of photos and news clippings, on Monday.

Rainbow Lake Park in Gilmanton was underwater late Thursday morning, Aug. 11, as nearby Elk Creek flooded into the pond.

Richards Road, just north of Hwy. 121, was swamped by the waters of Elk Creek’s southern branch Thursday morning.

Three Mile Creek was one of many Buffalo County tributaries to far overtop its banks during the flood, wiping out this pasture just south of Hwy. 121 east of Gilmanton.

Roads across central Buffalo and Trempealeau counties, like this stretch of Hwy. 121, sustained shoulder damage as the earth beneath them was eroded by the flooding.
