Stitches from the heart

Janet Bethke-Ede of Mondovi finished up one of the 68 pillowcase-style dresses she recently made for children in need. She also made 41 pairs of shorts and 15 skirts using the Bernina sewing machine she purchased in the ‘70s.

Stacks of shorts in various fun prints are secured by size next to finished dresses on Janet Bethke-Ede’s dining room table. Janet receives specific “wish lists” from missionaries who regularly travel to Haiti through Peace Lutheran Church in Eau Claire, so she knows exactly what clothing items to make and the sizes they need.

A row of brightly-colored skirts sat ready for shipment to Haiti last month. Fifteen white t-shirts were also purchased to go with the skirts, which joined dresses and shorts bound for the Love for Lozandier missionary clinic. It’s the second parcel of clothing Janet Bethke-Ede has worked to prepare for children in Haiti this year. Last January, 30 dresses, 27 pairs of shorts and 100 fleece hats were sent out.

Marge Linse pressed hems for a recent round of pillowcase dresses bound for Haitian mission relief. Janet, Marge, Mary Serum and Ruth Norrish have formed a Thrivent Action Team that helps the group pay for fabric and other supplies for projects twice a year.

Children at Love for Lozandier in Haiti modeled some of the dresses sent by Janet Bethke-Ede to the poverty-stricken island nation. Local causes, such as Operation Christmas Child, also benefit from Janet’s dedication to helping others by making clothing, fleece hats and blankets.

Janet, a retired home economics teacher, first began making fleece hats with her classes in the ‘90s. She estimates she has sewn around 1,000 hats for children in need locally, in other areas of the state, and in Haiti.
